Professional Protocol on Job Offers

So, I got my first job offer today. It is for a local office a couple hours from where I live. It isn’t my top pick even though I liked them. I do not want to completely turn it down yet before considering all my options. I still am waiting to hear back from another local place where I live that I interviewed with a couple of weeks ago, and I have yet to go to a scheduled interview at the end of the month out-of-state. What is the professional way or wording I should give this potential employer that has given me the offer? Like I said, I don’t want to decline it before considering all my options. I probably will not find out about all the jobs I interviewed at til early November. Is it too much to ask for to have them wait that long? Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!

You simply ask for some time to consider the offer. I think about 10 days is acceptable in many cases but beyond that is quite a long time for a firm to wait on a prospect.

What you wanna do is make sure to let the firms that haven't moved on you know that you have a deadline they must keep with. They will certainly understand that you can't sit on an offer indefinitely on the hopes they might hire you.

Just be very clear with all the firms and communicate your intentions often and clearly.

The offer letter usually tells you until when you have to accept the offer. You can always ask for some sort of extension, or truthfully let them know about your situation.

    ..Tread lightly..
