    Hi,
So I am planning to leave my job either before or after tax season hopefully. I have applied to the IRS and hopefully will hear back from them. Given its the government I dont expect any early notification but according to the job post it has an anticipated start date on March 19, 2019. Hypothetically, I get the job how should I go about the resignation? I would hate to leave before the tax season ends.. I mean my game plan is to let HR of IRS knows I would like to complete April 15 deadlines first and I’m not sure if they will allow this? But if they do allow a certain timeframe extension when should I give the 2 weeks? If I were to leave right after the deadline that means I should give the 2 weeks around April 3-4 but I feel like that would be nuts and leave a bad impression during the peak period to bother my team partner. Also, if interviews do happen during jan-april, how should I plan things around? Sorry for all these dumb questions but I just want to play all the right cards and not have a bad rep. Im just not sure how common it is to find jobs during busy season since we work 10-12 hours a day already..

This is my first job that I will be leaving from- if this does happen. I do not want to burn any bridges and leave a bad impression. Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated.

How big is the firm that work in? How long have you been there?

If you leave during busy season, I don't know how you don't burn bridges. I handed in a 4-week resignation in the first week in December for a small firm. I was part time and my boss promised to make me full-time in Jan. He still felt bitter about it.

Point is, if you think it's a good job for you (it was for me at the time bc it was at least full time), leave as gracefully as you can. But know there will probably be some resentment.

I think your new job will respect you if you tell them you made a commitment to your current firm that you will stay through busy season. It shows you are loyal.
Plenty of people quit jobs in public accounting right after deadlines, they'll get over it and appreciate that you held off till after 4/15. Good luck!

I was just on the IRS careers website yesterday and saw a ton of jobs listed.
Some in the virgin islands, which had me daydreaming for a bit.
What job did you apply for?

Hey turo, my firm has around 6000 people. We are in the top 15 national firms. I’ve been here for almost three years. Just recently I have been getting a lot of gossips about my hours. I know it’s a contract between me and my firm but I’m well aware my hours are below and I will try to catch up during tax season. So that was one factor that is causing me to make this decision
@nomorestudying- right I hope so. But at the same time I don’t want them to think oh if you are going to hold off that long we may as well take a different candidate..
@recked- I applied to both positions for the nationwide positions, internal revenue agent and the revenue officer one. I hope I’ll get at least one response. It’s gonna be a pay cut for me. Currently making 60k and the GS07 is only around 40 something. But I’m willing to sacrifice for the future benefits.

@recked,. If those jobs were in the Caymans, that would be something…and who's findings would probably pay for Medicare For All or a Green New Deal.

Proper way to resign? 2 week notice! If the firm needed to lay off people, do you think they would remain loyal to you and keep you? Of course not! Do what's best for yourself. There is never a “best” time to resign from public accounting. Even during slow season, someone else is going to have to pick up your work, so there's always going to be resentment.

THanks everyone for the response. @rollforward, I know right that’s my justification too. No firm will be loyal if they can’t utilize you anymore. But at the same time my team partner has been very involved with my career and I just didn’t want to disappoint them especially busy season is around the corner. Anyways, I’m determined to leave regardless after this season. I really feel like I’m hitting a plateau at this point and I’m not getting any opportunities to grow compare to my peers. It’s somewhat embarrassing when I imagine next year if younger staff will be in charging me.. it’s just an ego thing I can’t get pass
