Random classes help for unit req

    Hello,

Any advice from any of you who had to take random courses to fulfill unit requirements? After this Fall, I could be done taking those “required” ethics and accounting courses I lacked after graduating college a while back. I’m just hesitant since I don’t really know which courses to take now…..when I call CA hotline, they aren’t the most helpful and just simply told me to refer to their tip sheet. So I’m assuming for random courses, I don’t necessarily need to take anything related to business, accounting, or ethics anyone other than these units are from an accredited college?

    Regards,

Ya the CBA will not opine on classes typically, they just refer to the tip sheet and say that they'll evaluate your coursework and opine on whether you have everything or not once you submit your application for licensure.

I just made sure to complete the CBA worksheet putting my coursework into the respective areas, and made sure I wasn't being too aggressive in jamming classes into certain buckets. For me I just need the ethics in accounting course and then 23 additional units of bullshit. My plan was to take foothill online courses to make up the extra units…going to tackle classes like excel in accounting and quickbooks in accounting and just dominate them without needing to study since i use excel and QB most days at work anyway. That way I will have way more accounting coursework than I could possibly need. I have all of the requisite other business type classes covered since my major was in economics, so I don't need to worry about taking and management or finance or other business type classes. This should give me all the buffer I need to pass through their evaluation no sweat once the units are done.

Downside is itll take me 2 quarters to get the units I need, and while CC is cheap it'll still probably set me back 5k. Upside is its foothill online and i've heard that it is the easiest way to go from the coursework perspective.

If you can somehow get re-enrolled at your university CLEP is always a great way to go to test into units. I was unable to make CLEP work since no schools seem to want to enroll me since i already have my BS and I am not planning to pursue a masters or grad level degree.

Good luck and let me know if you come up with an easier route to tackle this, I am all ears. I will literally throw money at this problem haha

I'd also recommend Foothill for online classes. I'll be taking my accounting ethics there in 2018.

Second what Ana said. I took my accounting ethics there in a hybrid online/in-class format. it was a great and enjoyable class. i am currently fulfilling the other 10 semester units of ethics study using online classes at foothill and de anza. Are you sure about your credits? Since you've sat for the exam and passed all parts, you should be good for education requirements NOT INCLUDING the 15 units of ethics study. I would be very careful with what classes you pick. If you think you only need random classes to fulfill the general unit requirement, I would say you are mistaken because you should have already completed that when they allowed you to sit for the exam…

I am speaking as a CA applicant and I am not 100% confident in everything I'm saying…

atrain – yes i am certain of my unit needs. I graduated in 2006 before the new 150 semester unit requirement went into place. I got my degree in economics and did a concentration/minor in public accounting, thus satisfying both the business and accounting requirements and most of the ethics requirements. I just need the new ethic in accounting class and then enough units to get to 150 semester. I went to all quarter schools and graduated with 198 qtr units, at the time only 186 i believe was needed. But now the requirement for licensure is 150 semester which is 225 quarter.

The education requirements to sit for the exam are different than the requirements for licensure. Positive about that.

ahhh makes sense then. yeah, then just take whatever courses floats your boat! Just make sure you finish your ethics class! I would just take courses at your local community college. I graduated with a degree in economics and did MOST of my accounting work at community college, then took the CPA exams. I cannot stress how valuable community college coursework can be! Imagine, if there were no community colleges we'd all have to go get a masters in accounting!

good call i think i will be doing as many classes as i need at foothill. seems so stupid that they would have a different and higher bar to clear for licensure than for just sitting for the exams. What a total fake out. When I found that out earlier this year I was NOT a happy camper.

taking the excel and quickbooks classes through FH, as well as the ethics in accounting course I am needing anyway. Should knock out 13 of the 27 quarter units I am needing. Got my eyes on the fraud accounting course for next quarter….should give me some cushion in the ethics section that CA requires in the off chance they disallow any of my previously taken undergrad courses. There was a payroll accounting class too that I was probably going to take next quarter. From the reviews I read all of them seem to be pretty breezy courses if you have a decent amount of QB experience are are advanced in excel. Just registered on Wed.

ok cool, sucks that i have literally 40 semester units to make up due to the CA change….so im really hoping im taking the right courses per their tip sheet and it passes thru their review..i've taken ethics in accounting at FH and i have some intro to phil and intro to philosophy from my university days so i added fraud examination too. So all 4 adds up to over the 15 quarter (or 10 semester) units required per their tip sheet.
