I am studying for REG, and my exam is Sep 7 2017. I am pretty nervous about the exam as tax is not my strong point. I am really bad at calculating tax questions. I can do basic calculation but if they start to throw tough and tricky questions in SIM, I would probably not knowing what to do. I am currently using Becker and NINJA MCQ and notes as my study guides. For people who passed REG and is like me, you think I have a chance to pass? This exam just makes me feel so depressed, so I just want to get through it and move on with FAR and BEC.

All the feelings of doubt and depression many people go through. That is all part of the process for a lot of us. This exam is not only a test of intelligence, but a test of endurance as well. Meaning you have to really want it, effectively organize your life and mentality around it, and put in the time to study and get it done.

If you are doubting yourself, I highly suggest creating a fixed and regular schedule to make sure you get the studying in that you need. You will have to PUSH yourself. I am studying (hopefully for my last section) FAR and I've been in front of a computer screen since 7 AM this morning.

My eyes are tired, my brain is at capacity, but even at this point, you have to keep going. Find your groove and what works best for you. It might even take failing a couple times to realize what you need to do.

I definitely am trying my best to understand reg too. I would wake up at 5 before work and study till 7 and do the same thing when I get home from work. But tax just does not click in my brain no matter how hard I try to understand the materials. I dont have problem with Business Law or ethics, but corporate, S and partnership are my biggest problems. I have been practiced a lot. When I thought I got better, I tried Sims on Becker and had no idea what was going on when reading the questions. I just wonder if someone is like me and still pass. Thank you so much for your advise. I appreciate it. Really hope FAR is your last one. I am also planning to take FAR next if I pass reg.

Thank you I really hope I pass, I hope you pass too.

I've never liked tax either, but I have a few years of experience working in public accounting so when I studied for REG it was great because so much of the material was useful and relevant. Before I ever sat for REG, I always told people how much I feared that section of the exam the most. Turns out, after I found my groove, I was pretty hooked on it and found it (dare I say) enjoyable to learn.

What really helped me was doing the MCQ by topic. You can set it so you can focus on just one topic and go through all those MCQ back to back. This way you can become familiar with how the questions are asked and even use a bit of pattern recognition to answer the questions (you'll know what information you need from the questions and how to use it). You will also become more familiar with which are the more “difficult” or complex questions, so you can always use those as a reference to get a more comprehensive understanding of the topic.

Also by using this method, each MCQ gives you an explanation for the correct answer. So in that case, you don't even have to read the book, which will save a lot of time for you to focus on more MCQs. I only used the book when I needed more clarification AFTER reading the explanations from the MCQs and if I still had trouble understanding it.

It has been really effective for me to work through the material this way. Everything you need to know is literally right there in the MCQs…I consider all the other study material a supplement…if you need it.

    Good luck to you 🙂

How about SIMS, how you study for it? I am using Becker and NINJA, people said that REG sims on becker are different compared to the real exam. Good luck to you too!

For the SIMs you will have the enhanced SIMs, the research questions, and DRS.

There not much you can do to prepare for these other than do as many practice SIMs as possible and really understand the material conceptually.

You'll want to familiarize yourself with using the Authoritative Literature tool, so try to get some practice with that.

Also take a few practice exams and focus on your timing. Timing is very important especially on the new format since there are less MCQs and more SIMs now.

I took REG in July-I can say that my MCQ were not math intensive at all, and I didn't find that there is that much math while studying as well.. (less than BEC I thought). SIMS were tough and I honestly am not sure what I could have done differently preparing for them. For FAR, I am thinking to leave all the SIMS in Becker for last, so that they are more of a review for me. In other sections I did them as part of the studying for each chapter, but not sure that was the best idea. Ninja SIMS didn't help with exam ones at all for this one. I think in the case of REG-definitely know your concepts in order to do the SIMS.

@anyatver: yeah, thank you for your advice. I honestly think the only thing I can do now is just read and memorize the materials. Practice and understand why is wrong is probably what I am gonna do. I am just gonna try my best and if I fail then I am gonna retake it till I pass lol. It is not going to be forever.

I am having the same problems. REG has way too much random information that must be mastered. Cumulative Reviews of my notes, MCQ, Skills, and TBS have helped a lot but it is very, very time consuming and exhausting. It's crazy how I learn new concepts and rules when I study using different methods. However, I am nervous about this exam too and have found it harder than FAR – no doubt. Debit and credits make sense to me. The IRC is a bunch of sh*t.

Goodluck and I am right there with u guys.

Also, how in the HELL could they have only tested candidates for 3 hours in the prior quarters with all of this info? I'm almost happy we have 4 hours of testing as crazy as that sounds! 😂

These new SIM questions really make our brains work hard. I recall one questions where I would have needed the whole review book to answer the questions precisely. Did my best to find all the scatterd information in my head….I wish I did enough to pass this beast! Like @Blue Collar Nerd I've combined several reviews to help my understanding on the massive materials.

    AUD - 75
    BEC - 76
    FAR - 78
    REG - 79
    ALL PASS PLEASE!

yeah I agree with all of you. The test was already hard, and now the new test is even harder to pass. I am so frustrated and just want to pass and move on.

@wannaFree: what you mean by that lol?

@tud51397 I just took the REG exam the other day. For two of the sims Becker didn't even cover the information at all (not in the study book at all). The rest of the sims weren't too bad but they are just time consuming. Plan accordingly. Besides the research sim, all my sims had at least 8 attached documents per sim.

Be familiar with using the code if you need to do research. However, be aware you might not have a lot of time to use it if you have to review a bunch of documents.

    REG: Q3 '17

    FAR: Q4 '17

    AUD: Q4 '17

    BEC: Q1 '18
