Becker R2-10 says Tuition and Fees Deduction had not been extended through 12/31/16, but that is not the case, right?

This was my second time taking REG.
First time I had it in feb, I got 73.
It was also my first fail. It was so shocking…

Since then I reset my becker stats and redid everything.
I don't know if they updated or changed mock exam (pre exam) but
this time around I scored 78 on the second one.

I was confident and thought I was prepared for the exam but oh man…
Even though I thought they said they will put less emphasis on Blaw
I had so many Blaw questions on the second testlet.
I felt so horrible coming out of the test center.

But I also believe feeling like you bombed it means you probably did good and passed.
(btw first time around, I felt pretty good and thought I passed, and failed)

    Hope everyone pass!
This wait is going to be so long…

Holly, do you recommend Ninja MCQ over Becker and Wiley…?

@Holly Sexton – Hi Holly! I saw your reply.

“@drumkstick you are so right with the salaries thing. The other thing I asked Becker and they said I was right about what I heard. The lecture on page R2-4 says that the contribution can be extended along with the tax return extension – this is not true!”

I read B2-4 as, as long as the taxpayer pays the IRA before April 15, they can take the deduction regardless of an extension. But any IRA payments made after April 15 would be deducted in the following year. I could be wrong though. Find the tax code/law that supports your statement and send it to Becker. If you do win, you should print and frame their response admitting the mistake. Keep me updated!!

“@drumstick the other thing I was questioning on the same simulation question was FICA. (First how can they have FICA taxes if the only salary was to sole proprietor and it's a draw-not really asking, just rolling my eyes and annoyed) They are deducting the whole $2,600 and half should've been taken from the employees portion and not an expense for the sch c.”

Is this in Becker? I haven't seen this Simulation, I'm on R3-M5 currently. You are absolutely right in everything you said regarding self-employment for the owners, the schedule C, etc. Are they trying to trick you or is the deduction in the solution? Is it an employee's or the owner's FICA?

“Becker R2-10 says Tuition and Fees Deduction had not been extended through 12/31/16, but that is not the case, right?”

Congress did not renew the Tuition and Fees Deduction for 2017, but you could use the deduction for Spring 2017 tuition and fees paid in January for your 2016 tax return. The American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit were extended.

@holly- I haven't start with REG yet. Taking FAR today. The posts about the FAR in the other forum are very negative. Hoping to do my best today and my plan is to start with REG tomorrow.

    @drumstick Becker's response
    Hi Holly,

Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, you are correct. Yes, the extension does not extend the IRA date.

    I hope this helps.

@drumstick yeah it's from the simulation in R1, second problem, question 7 or 8. It's in the solution. I emailed them again about this one.

@robertchapa0719 I recommend NINJA MCQ over getting the extra MCQ from Becker. I have found (with the previous version of the test at least) that the NINJA questions are more like the actual test questions, and probably cheaper than Becker. I use Becker to learn to the material and I use NINJA to review.

@holly Thank you for the advice! I've always wondered about the Ninja MCQ, so looks like I'll be giving them a try.

@Holly Sexton – I believe the question is to calculate the self-employment tax owed, rather than the deduction. This would be done through Schedule SE and input into the 1040 on line 57.

What's up guys! Just gone taking FAR and now I'm on to REG, my last test (hopefully). I will start studying tomorrow, or I may take the weekend off to refresh and get started Monday. I plan to test mid August. Good luck everyone!

@drumstick are you talking about the simulation and FICA taxes? I heard back from Becker:

    Subject: FICA Taxes & Salary

    Hi Holly,

The “salary” is a draw. The FICA taxes are the deductible employer portion on employees. This is selected information, and the employee wages are just not part of the problem.

    I hope this helps.
