Planning to take this on 10/20 (haven't actually scheduled yet). Super nervous, because I know like zero of the material and it's been years since I took a tax class. Gonna be using Roger, plus Ninja MCQ & Ninja Audio. I'm sure I'll be in here a lot asking questions 🙂

Let's do this Q4! I am working on BUL lectures (R5 done, on R6) and taking lots of notes since I skipped the lectures last time. Still not sure if I should re-watch the tax lectures too or just jump straight into the NINJA MCQs when I am done. Where is everyone at with their studies?

    BEC: 73, 81
    AUD: 85
    FAR: 71, 77
    REG: 74, 75...finally DONE! 😀

*This is my 2nd attempt at the CPA exam. For all of you who have failed this exam many times, given up on it, or taken a break like me, remember that it is still possible to finish what you started...failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently 🙂

Good luck to all the REG test takers today (and anyone else, for that matter). Only a couple more hours until the good ol' Prometric waiting room.

Hi, I'm trying to understand how or why tax exempt interest expense is included in the equation for DNI. I've searched Google several times and cannot seem to locate a good example. I hope that this is a figure that will simply be given on the test, but you know how that goes. There is nothing simple about the CPA exam, lol. If anyone understands this, I would appreciate the feedback. Thank you.

    Thankful

While I'm not quite there yet in my studying, is it possible that it is included because tax exempt interest is reportable, just not taxed?

    AUD - 99
    BEC - 97
    REG - 91
    FAR - 1/8/16

I never quite understood it either. I always just told myself that DNI was income minus expenses and you ignore capital gains because something something corpus.

I think @rzrbkfaith has the right idea, at any rate.

    @ Star86:

Think of it like book income vs. tax income. Even though tax exempt interest is not taxable income, it is money that was deposited to the bank account. Therefore, it is able to be distributed to the beneficiary. In that way, it is like book income.

Got through individual taxation yesterday….feeling a little discouraged because there are SO many little rules, and I attempted some Ninja MCQ afterwards and struggled.

How do you guys remember all of the tax rules?

Honestly… I know most of them from working with them. I would just say work the MCQ until none of the little rules surprise you.
