I just had my interview with a firm today, and the manager asked me have I ever thought about going to or apply in big four or mid year firms…… any idea on how to answer this question?

Sometimes they ask this question because they want to know why you want to work at a Regional Firm. There are people that intentionally do not want to work at a Big 4 and would rather be at a regional firm. I left the Big 4 after 3 years for a regional firm. I picked that firm because I had heard great things about them from a lot of friends that worked there. Also, I liked that the local office only had 50 people total, so you were exposed to a lot more during an audit and you actually got to know the people that you worked with. I knew everyone that worked in the regional firm and on engagements you interacted with the partners.

If you are applying at all firms you can be upfront. And tell them that at this point you are applying at all public accounting firms and as you interview you will get to pick the one that is the best fit for you.

You want the answer to basically say “there's a reason I chose to apply here” so the appropriate answer is what is it about the firm you're interviewing at attracted you to apply there. What they're really asking is if they hire you would you jump ship first chance you get.
