I need help. Please
I have started my FAR journey. I love accounting and enjoy studying while working full time. Plain facts, not being sacrastic. I am studying two Fs per week
However, I have noticed that once I learned next two the previous chapters are deleted from my memory. What a hell???what does it mean? How I can overcome it?

It's very overwhelming. I just took FAR for a 3rd time (one pass, one fail, one pending). Every single time, everything gets pulled together for me in the review. Now obviously I have a lot of exposure to the material, but that doesn't mean I don't forget lots of it. But, you really need to reserve 2 weeks to review. Also as you're going through the new material, do your best to review old material and take old MCQ's. That will help keep the info locked into memory.

So what I did was make a kind of cheat sheet (max three pages) of stuff that I should memorize and write down on the scratch paper when they give it to you on test day. These included ratios that were not as readily available in my head, general formulas and flow of accounts and relationships, and basic steps. You will see a number of things keep popping up throughout your course (Becker) like the PUFIER mnemonic etc. I know some might disagree, but I found this somewhat comforting. Remember, FAR is an inch deep and a mile wide. The examiners know that this is hard. When I took it two days ago, I felt that it was a fair exam. Just hammer MCQs from past chapters until you can do problems in your head. Finally, understand the concepts and not only memorizing formulas.There is some logic behind these concepts and as long as you can think through it, you are gonna do ok. Its a lot, but if this is your first exam, in my opinion, its only gonna get easier

Here is what I did when studying for FAR and any of the other 3 exams:

When reviewing MCQs, ANY question I got wrong, or guessed/was unsure about, but thought I would need to revisit, I would write the answer explanation down. After finishing a chapter, I would have a page or two of these correct answers that I had gotten wrong that I could go back and read & review. In the morning I would wake up an hour early and start reading through all of these answers. It acted as a simple and easy mini review before my final review before the exam. It kept me familiar with the earlier chapters and I think it is what helped me in passing the exams.

Well I took it this last Monday and well….. I felt the exact same…. I realized when I took the test how much I had forgot… The good thing is now I know how to review if I find out if I failed. The questions were much easier than I had anticipated…. Saying that I still think I did poorly because of the mile wide of “easier” conceptual information I had forgotten. I did better at the math problems (Leases, Bonds, ect.) but felt like I was getting DESTROYED on the abundance of NFP/Govt on the MCQs. The sims however it felt better. Again… much easier than I anticipated BUT mile wide. I use Becker… Becker wasted a bunch of my time learning the what ifs that could go into the questions that just didn't seem to show up on test day. Just don't information overload right before the test. Your brain will get bogged down.

Don't Give Up!

My lesson learned is to commit to studying. If you don't, life moves on.... but you won't.

Passed and failed numerous others back in 2016-2017.... dropped out after having a kid, decided I needed to get this finished. Passed AUD then found out we were having our second child.

@James I guess they have to tell you all ifs just in case. Were questions really easier than you have seen with prep course? I am using the same. And I hate Notes Payable with alll my heart. I love Gov/NFP because I had an amazing professor for those things at the college. Sha taught us well.


@Snipergang, my problem is that new chapters simply eliminated previous ones from my memory. I am so confused why and what I should do about it.

That was the very thing that concerned me the most about FAR. It is a tremendous number of topics.There are certain topics I have engrained in my memory and others that I completely have forgotten haha ie pensions. It's like muscle memory, at first you might think you forgot, but once you start reviewing you'll pick it back up. A test of this size requires you to continuously review. I did that a certain points in time while I studied. If you have a good study guide, and can truly understand the topics, the chances are that these topics will enter the long term memory bank of your brain. I used Wiley. I felt the lectures were satisfactory, they had some good videos, but I didn't really use them. I went on youtube and found professor Farhat. He explains things so well. There were topics I kept bombing. Accounting for bonds, debt and investment side, I really just didn't understand what was going on. I went on his youtube page and he has such a great lecture on it that I mastered the topic. I ended up with an 86 on my first try. There were so many times I wanted to have a panic attack b/c of how overwhelmed I felt, but it does you no good. Don't panic, stay focused, take it one day at a time and really understand what you learn. Don't just hope that it sticks, really make sure you get it.

@Say, thank you an advice. I will check his videos. He came to our college last year. Unfortunately, I was not at that meeting.

I am currently in the same boat as you are. It's overwhelming but try and remember that you don't have to know everything.

With FAR especially, I would recommend going back and reviewing what you have already learned as you push through the material.

Somebody else already mentioned it but doing MCQ from the topics you've already covered is the key. It doesn't take that many questions to keep it fresh. If you do a unit today, do a few multiple choice from that unit tomorrow after you get done covering the next unit, and so on….

I went through the materials for FAR probably 3 times. I read through the chapters once and did the MCQs, I them skimmed the chapters and scratched notes and did some MCQs, then I reread the chapters I struggled with and did more MCQs. It wasn't until my third time around that I really felt I had a good grasp of the material. It's OK if you don't remember everything on your first time through the material.

I made a cheatsheet too (referring to J's comment). It worked and I passed this time with an 80. It is a lot of info. Just keep going over the stuff you already studied so you don't forget it.
