Retake and REG study tips

    I failed the first two exams I took and since then my boss, who is paying for them and allowing me to study for them for a small amount of time at work, is demanding I come in at 7 am to study(you know because I already work from 8-5:30 with no break and I’m underpaid and I don’t want a break from this place). I got a 63 and a 55 on my exams, I took AUD first and then FAR, from what I’ve gathered these two are thought to be the most difficult. He doesn’t understand that it’s normal for people to not do well on the first time around. Anyway, I got to work at my normal time only to get my ass chewed for not being here an hour early and I was basically told I’m stupid, actual words were “What were those grades you got, they were pretty really low so you obviously don’t know what you’re doing,”. Anyway, now instead of studying like I want to do I’m in my office crying and posting on this. This is coming from a guy with a high school degree by the way, just because he owns his own business with his high school degree he’s automatically some genius that is loads smarter than me. He didn’t even bother to ask why I’m late, if he did then he’d know I have extremely bad chronic insomnia and I typically don’t fall asleep til 6 am every night and overslept my alarm, on accident, and I still got here before 8. I can’t even get anything done here anyway, I start studying and he’s in my office every 5 minutes asking me how to do something, because he runs an entire business and literally knows how to do none of the things it actually takes to run it.

    Anyway, I need some study tips for AUD and FAR retakes and for REG that I’m studying now, even though he’s a jerk I can’t afford to lose my job (which he has threatened God knows how many times) because of the whole being underpaid and I have bills and loans and I’m working constantly so I have little to no time to even begin to look.

    The good is a job with very reasonable hours. The bad is poor sleeping pattern and a boss that doesn't understand. Also – acceptance of not doing well the first time is a form of planning for failure.

    What I would do – first make the exam transparent to the owner. He obviously knows something if he's a successful business owner. I would say do absolutely nothing of the exams at work. But first work on sleep patterns. I used natural supplement melatonin for some nights. Have you checked with your doc? It will be near impossible to successfully study with poor sleep.

    The single most effective strategy for me on the exam was to wake up 1.5 hours early and study then – with nobody to bother you. But that was in addition to studying at night (less intensely) and on saturdays. I cut out Sunday study for sanity.

    Don't accept failure and make your boss proud.

    If he's saying anything inappropriate to make you cry – leave. I didn't hear anything tremendously off base but I'm tone deaf on some things.

    Also – don't move on to another test without killing the first one! It makes no sense to travel round the horn of Africa when you didn't even get a passport.

    Reasonable hours lol, most people I know at least have a 30 minute lunch break. I literally get no break whatsoever and some days I would be working from 7am – 8 at night with no break. Half the time I feel like I can't even get up from my desk and go pee because if I leave my desk for more than 30 seconds because I guarantee you I'll get an email or an instant message that is “urgent” and if I don't start on it the second I receive it I'll get chewed out. There is nothing to help with the sleep patterns, I've seen multiple doctors and tried supplements and medicine and literally anything you'd be able to think of. I've been to specialist and doctors and there isn't anything that will help, everything I've tried I have had absolute horrifying reactions to. Not a single thing has worked, they either make me hallucinate or make me twitch to the point where it could be considered a small seizure. I've had this problem for about 12-13 years, I'm not trying to sound rude or like a know-it-all but I have literally tried everything I can to help me sleep better. I'm not risking my health by feeding my body with medicines and supplements that make me hallucinate and twitch the way the do just because my boss wants to act like a child. Also, the bothering thing. It doesn't matter if I get here an hour early, my boss will have emails for me to answer and if I don't tend to him the exact second he asks for something he losses it. So, I get to work and try to study only to be bombarded with at least 2-3 questions every hour that take a minimum of 5 minutes to solve. So if I'm studying the first 3 hours of the day like he suggests that is a minimum of 30 minutes (most of the time it's more than this) where I have to drop what I'm doing, switch focus, get the task done, switch focus again and attempt to bring my concentration back to study mode only to be interrupted a few minutes later. He also literally called me stupid. You don't call your employees stupid, it's disrespectful. Threatening my job on a regular basis is also not a way to make me feel very secure and it certainly doesn't help me concentrate, it just adds to my already massive stress level. I might have gotten poor grades but these exams are hard and nearly all of the people I know, including him, couldn't understand the basic concepts of accounting. He's acting like this is something that I should be able to go and take and get a 90 score on without even trying.

    melatonin is useless garbage . $10 down the drain . I tried it.

    Go to doctor ask for Xanax and take it 1 hour before bedtime. cheaper than the melatonin garbage . $2.05 for 30 pills

    Mafalo – it sounds like you made up your mind. But in the first post – you said 8-530 which is stellar. Then you said 7a to 8p. I understand there are busy periods but if that's a constant, and if the work environment is caustic – acceptance of that environment is condoning it. Inability to take a peaceful moment for lunch and bio breaks is a show stopper. Everyone has their cross to bear on these exams. Based on everything here – it sounds like best course of action would be to speak with clergy or a counselor and build professional assertiveness to create a working environment that is beneficial to you and employer. I know what it's like to have people try to steamroll you. But there's a point when it becomes voluntary. Best wishes. Signing off on this one 🙂

    a major cure for my insomnia was exercise…I know your schedule is already packed but if you can hit the gym or go for a run a few times a week, it will help

    BEC = 79

    AUD = 79

    FAR = 84

    REG = 86

    Prayer + AICPA blueprints = my success

    BEC = 72 (6/08/16)
    FAR = ?
    REG = ?
    AUD = ?
