Should I learn to golf?

I’m starting soon at a large regional CPA firm and it seems like quite a few of the senior managers and partners are big into golf. I guess my question is whether being an average/good golf player would give me any kind of advantage in fitting in with the firm culture? I’ve had quite a few people tell me yes, but I wanted to voice my thoughts on here as well.

Yes definitely. You’re going to suck at first if you’ve never played before, so I would spend a few days a week at the driving range, and worry about putting later.

It can't hurt. I golf about once a week with a partner in another local firm, and have set up a golf outing with some other partners in another local firm in a couple days.
It's a frustrating game, but there is a lot of downtime while playing so it's a good chance to get to know people and trade work stories.
Just be cool on the course. Don't be that guy and you'll be alright.

When we golf with a client, do we bill it out?

We have a client that we know if we must reach him to call before 2, because he'll be golfing at 3.

Alternative take – you could be the annoying newbie that takes forever and hits people on adjacent fairways with your newbie slice.

Find other ways to fit in – be yourself … or volunteer to drive the cart and keep the cooler stocked with ice.

I'm a scratch golfer – and no one cares.

From my experience playing with my bosses, no one really cares if you are good or not. If you want to get into the game then great! That will be one more thing that you have in common, but I wouldn't think being average/good would make much of a difference.

It's worth knowing the basics but it's more nostalgic in the business world especially when people try to convince you that you need golf in order to close that dream deal you've been wanting since you were knee high to a grasshopper. Nerd up and focus on your strengths, you'll be fine.
