Sims during final review = waste of time?

    Hey guys,

I have my AUD exam on Tuesday and I am feeling pretty good about it. I have been doing Ninja MCQ like crazy, looking over some ninja flashcards, always listening to the ninja audio and when I am burned out but want to keep studying I look over the Ninja notes.

I would like your opinion though- is practicing the sims a waste of time? Here’s my thinking- it goes through concepts that take longer to answer while MCQ can (in the same time) go through more concepts and touch on more areas.

Please let me know your thinking, I want to make sure I am being as efficient as possible in my last few days of review. Thanks in advance to anyone who contributes their thoughts, much appreciated!

Off-topic side note: does anyone know how to tag someone in a post? Ie: when someone responds to this post and I want to respond back to them I see others writing “@_____” and it shows a link, but when I try it, it doesn’t show up…any ideas?

Not a waste of time at all! I did AUD SIMS in Ninja probably twice. Their AUD SIMS were actually comparable to the test in some instances. I did Becker ones as well. In fact, the night before my AUD exam I did about 30 of them, and felt like crap, because I scored low on so many of them, but I ended up getting an 87 on the test, so I think it really helped. I would definitely incorporate the SIMS as doing them may reveal some holes in your knowledge base you didn't know existed.

@anyatver – This is the other side of my thinking, I am glad they helped you. It is frustrating that we can only do one sim at a time on Ninja MCQ but the fact that it helped you puts me at ease.

EDIT: I guess the @ works this way, too bad it won't let me edit the original post to take that last part out

Not a waste of time. Once I wrap up the rest of the government/NFP MCQs for FAR, I will work as many SIMs as possible until my exam day next Friday. SIMs are great practice to get an overall comprehensive review.

50% of the exam? Not a waste of time.

I didn't do many sims for prep. I think the most I did was about 30 – maybe even 20 – but even though my exam questions were very different – it's that practice that makes all the diff.

I like to sprinkle in 2 or 3 sims between MCQ sessions. I do most of them in about 5 min or less.

    AUD - 77
    BEC - 81
    FAR - 77
    REG - 81
REG - 1. Becker only - fail (forgot to study depr - oops); 2. Becker only - Pass
FAR - 1. Becker only - fail; 2. added Ninja Notes and MCQ - Pass
AUD - 1. Becker videos; Ninja Notes, Audio, MCQ, Becker Notes - Pass
BEC - 1. Ninja Notes, Audio, MCQ, Becker Notes - Pass

Btw-while for AUD I found doing SIMS extremely beneficial, I thought for REG, in hindsight they were a total waste of time..All of my SIMS were DRS on the exam for REG, and nothing could have helped me there:) LOL!

I don't find them to be a waste of time. Although you're right they take a lot longer multiple choice questions are somewhat limited in combing concepts. There's only so much that can be put into a multiple choice question and it generally the focus is limited. There are also things that there aren't many multiple choice questions for because the nature of the topic doesn't lend itself well to multiple choice.

    AUD: 92

    BEC: 82

    REG: 87

    FAR:87 8/31

I never did any practice sims for my exams. I still think practicing SIMs is a waste of time for FAR and REG but I wish I would have practiced some SIMs for AUD. I haven't gotten my score back yet but I think not practicing the SIMs is gonna bight me.

    AUD - 83
    BEC - 82
    FAR - 86
    REG - 82

What I've done is practice sims as I go – each time I completed a study unit (20 total for each section), I would 2 sets of sims (5 sims in a set). By the time I got through the material I would have done 200 sims.

I've never felt the need to do sims during my final review because anytime I would come across an MCQ that I didn't feel strong on the concept (even if I knew the answer to that particular question), I would go back to my book and read up on it. But, if you haven't practiced them pretty extensively throughout all of your studying I would say it's probably a good idea!

Absolutely not. Once you pounded a mcq test bank 2000+ times you are getting diminishing returns IMO. Doing another set of 30 questions on top of that won't make that much of difference in the understanding and learning material because more likely than not you have already memorized the answer. That is why I firmly believe you should work sims once you exhausted the mcq or at the end of your study sessions. Really help bring all of the pieces together and more likely than not you will have some missing gaps in the material that you can fill in.

This is coming from someone from who failed FAR with a 74 because I didn't practice sims. Stronger on mcq, weak on sims. One my second attempt, I did practice sims and passed. I very did felt it played a major role in passing.

    AUD - 82
    BEC - 80
    FAR - 81
    REG - 82
    FAR - 74 first attempt
