I’ve heard a few times that Becker simulations aren’t reflective of the REG exam. Any advice on how to prepare? Taking REG on Monday!

Hi jl3357. I took the REG exam last October. I use Becker only to study. I found that doing the becker sims (also working in tax) did help me prepare for the sims on the exam. Of course the SIMS on the exam wont be the same as the SIMS on becker but practice makes perfect and constantly doing the sims will help you be more prepared for the exam.

I don't remember any surprises in the REG sims…it was pretty much the stuff you'd expect.

Ok great – I've just been seeing a bunch of people struggling with REG using Becker.

Another question – do you think it is necessary to memorize phase out amounts? or number values in general (other than percentages)? There are so many different phase out amounts!

I'd focus on which things have phase outs more than $ amounts…I'd know the percentages (2% for misc., 10% for healthcare, etc.), but I don't recall getting any “know how much income there is before phase out” questions. I certainly understood how they worked though…and what was subject to a phase out at what general income level.

My issue with Becker-REG…understanding it may have also been as much me…was more how they organized chapters and how they broke up work load. They also had lots of Qs where the answer/material wasn't in book or lecture. I googled a lot, and read their answers THOROUGHLY.

I found BEC more “where did that come from” than REG. REG was what I expected.

I found Becker REG SIMs to be very consistent with what you see on the exam. There were no surprises on SIMs.

Namstut: I'll be studying for REG using Becker starting next week so would love to know your exam result. I'm happy to hear you think Becker did a good job with REG and you had little or no surprises.

@Goingallin my results will mean nothing. My point is that practically everything I saw on the exam I've seen in Becker, but I was weak in some areas so the score will definitely show that I understudied. 🙂
