Skipping Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting In FAR

    Hello,

I will appear for the first time in FAR (also my first CPA exam) in February 2017. I wanted to know if I can skip Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting topics and still be in good shape to at least pass? The only other subtopic that I have avoided studying is Share based payments.
This will give me more revision time. I only get 2 hours a day to study, and so far I have only completed first read of the Wiley Study Guide.
Also, I haven’t really looked into new inclusions in the test syllabus since 2014, and have been studying from the 2014 study guide. Should I be worried?

    Thank you,

Absolutely not. You don't stand a chance of passing without those two. I can almost guarentee you'll fail if you don't know those topics in and out and every which way. Trust me. I skipped derivatives and don't regret it. Even if I fail, derivatives made me sick and I couldn't understand even basic concepts.. so skip small topics or foreign stuff over governmental.. better yet try not to skip anything…I would rather go over every topic at least once (except derivatives lol) than review more.. you never know what you'll happen to remember on test day. Good luck!

I definitely would NOT skip Gov/NFP. That's a huge chunk of the exam and you're setting yourself up for failure if you skip it. You would have to know everything else inside and out to even have a chance at passing. You should also look into updated material since there have been some changes since 2014.

Definitely don't skip it…you'd be setting yourself up for failure. I did skip derivatives for the most part in FAR and barely passed

Hahaha No. Just… no. Many people study everything they have and still fail. I suggest not skipping anything. There have been changes since 2014, AND you are going to have to put in more time- mornings, nights, weekends. Many people have well over 200 hours in FAR. Hopefully you won’t need that much, but 2 hours a day is not enough.

    Good luck!

If you skip those, I would be extremely surprised if you were able to pass FAR. Each section, Government and NFP is 8-12% of the multiple choice. That is at a minimum 16% of your exam, and possibly 24%.

I would attribute my first fail to FAR because of my lack of study time that I dedicated towards Govt/NFP.

I went from a 68-72 in FAR because I focused on Govt/NFP…Still scoring weaker on SIMS

16-24% of your test will consist of Government/NFP. That should say enough. Please don't skip over it.

Just adding my voice to the chorus of emphatic no's. I was expecting government and not-for-profit accounting to be heavily tested on my exam and prepared accordingly — and I still walked away wishing I had spent more time on those areas! Unlike the GAAP sections, broad concepts aren't enough; you really have to know the details.

Why? That's like easily 30% of the test and besides Gov't, NFP is relatively easy. Please do not skip, if you want to skip, go to the FAR CSO and skip areas that you can't find on that report.

@RE2PECT…I think your 68 on REG proves this grading system is whack. I remember you saying you put 0 in all sims???!!

The only shot you would have at passing is if 1) you luck out and get an exam with very little Gov/NFP, and 2) you would have to be almost perfect on everything else. Being that this is your first exam, you don't want to take any shortcuts, especially with FAR. They will test you on literally anything, and that really holds true with that exam.
