Switching Indirect Tax to Direct Tax?

I just passed the CPA exam. Took an offer at a B4 for indirect tax. Not sure yet if its for me because I would like to be doing returns. Would the switch be easy? Is indirect tax a marketable skill/experience to have in the long run?

I don't know about the switch but I would have to think that it wouldn't be terribly difficult as a staff. You may even get the rotation.

From what I've seen – indirect isn't glamorous but it's a necessary part of business and every indirect person I know is constantly saturated with work. That seems to be a plus for marketability. However, once branded as indirect, I don't know how difficult it would be to change (say after 2-3 years experience). I'm sure it happens but best is to get to where you want to be early.

Several indirect people I know have different creds than cpa – CMI (?) and EA.

I appreciate the insight M123. Yeah youre right about the different designations. Thats why I think it might be easier to distinguish myself from those in indirect (from a direct person's viewpoint) because I have a CPA? Not sure if that logic is sound just a guess.

Another question I have is about promotions in indirect. Is it similar to that of direct at a B4? Specifically, can you make partner?

I know several partners in indirect so that's affirmative.
