Take Old FAR or Take New FAR

Hi Ninjas. Please advise. I am using Roger and have gotten through 7 sections. (there are 30). I am scheduled to take the exam in early March. Should I take it knowing that I will likely not get through all the material? or should I push it back and take the new version and get through all the material?

Basically I fear the new version, but I just don’t think I could pass. I am really far removed from school and not doing anything financial for a career.

    Thoughts?

Try it..what is the worse that can happen? Losing the fee or having a chance of passing?

No need to fear the new format, they have removed 24 MCQ and added one additional SIM (8 total) and a scheduled 15 minute break. Content coverage is pretty much the same.

Roger covers some big topics in the last third of his course so if you're not even close to being ready by now, I'd suggest taking it in Q2.

If your NTS will still be good for Q2 then I would wait if it were me if you know you won't finish the material and have time to review MCQs. I have my exam scheduled for 3/6 and am finishing up my review of the material today and I feel like I'm not leaving myself enough time to practice MCQs and sims.

If your NTS will expire in March, then work hard and do the best you can. Or if you have plenty of money to spend on this exam and don't mind losing some, then still work hard to study and make an honest attempt out of it in March.

    Good luck!

I gave advice based on my experience after trying to pass FAR after only getting through 12 chapters of Roger. It was a freakin' disaster. 🙂

KatiB, if you had a strong financial reporting background, I'd say give it a shot. But if topics like leases, cash flows, consolidations, Govt and NPF are relatively unfamiliar territory, why waste the $300?

Your mileage may vary, of course.

How long has it taken you to get through 7 out of 30 sections? If that's 2-3 weeks then I say push and go for it in q1. If more than a month I think you'd be spinning your wheels to even attempt it without a strong financial accounting background.

What's the worst that can happen if you take it in Q1? Unless you think you have absolutely no shot and can't get through your review course, it couldn't hurt taking it.

On a side note, good thing for the breaks. I think it should have always been mandatory for a break. Not fair for people who need to go to the bathroom or work better after a few minutes walking around.

@jsn3004, so true about the breaks. I feel like it really doesn't it make it fair to test candidates who test at different Prometrics. I'm not sure if most have bathrooms, but mine doesn't. It's in an office building so you have to leave the Prometric center and risk getting lost due to your extreme test anxiety. That's partially a joke, but it does probably add a few minutes to your break (and decrease test time) to get to the bathroom.

Usually I would say take it, there's nothing to lose HOWEVER since its FAR, I would consider it a waste of money to take it now being you haven't even covered half of FAR. Even if you've already went through all of it, you would have to review and make sure you didn't forget what you learned. I'm not going to argue if its the hardest or not of the four exams, but it is a fact FAR covers twice as much as the other three. Unless you have strong technical accounting background and your ability to learn far surpass the average candidate, I say why waste money even if its affordable.

I took FAR knowing full well I would fail. It was the only one I did that way. I didn't even study the day before. Just take it and who cares if you have to retest.

I think you nailed it. I spin my wheels on simple FAR concepts so I might as well postpone to April and give myself a little more time.

I am hopeful, but simultaneously have extreme dread. I just don't know how anyone is able to pass.

And those higher order skills scare the tar out of me

Unless your NTS is expiring and you will lose the money anyway, I don't get why you'd take it when you are unprepared. Seems like a waste of time and money. Now if the NTS is expiring, then I'd definitely go ahead and take it because you've got nothing to lose at that point.
