So I am waiting on my final exam score (Mar 8) and trying to catch up on some movies. Thoughts on The Accountant? I thought it was pretty decent. Definitely some accounting stereotypes though, ha.

February 27, 2017 at 12:32 pm #1499608Ryan – Just Another DollarParticipantI watched it for a 2nd time this weekend, the first time I was on a plane and didn't pay that much attention. I found myself laughing more than I felt I should, mostly at the super-accountant montage as he's ripping through 15 years of financials to find the missing money. The fact that the actual accounting and tax work made the cut into the movie was pretty entertaining to me, but I suspect a lot of people found it annoying (like who cares about these farmers' home office and company vehicle deductions?). I found it to be one of the better movies I've seen recently.

It is an interesting representation of working for small public accounting firms because many do shady business in order to earn revenue and stay in business.

Ditto.
Makes for an interesting gun counter conversation when I'm buying .50 bmg ammo.

I don't think this is true. Quite the opposite.
If this has been your experience, you've had some serious bad luck.
I don't really remember my CPA exam scores. I've been a CPA for decades... I run a four CPA firm in Redmond WA. I'm the author of a bunch of books about small business accounting including QuickBooks for Dummies and Quicken for Dummies.February 27, 2017 at 1:26 pm #1499671AnonymousInactiveI knew someone would disagree. But it is not just my experience nor is it far from the truth, it is the industry as a whole. Experienced accountants know what they can and can't get away with.
For example, under the table payments are illegal, however many accountants can blatantly see in the books that these type of transactions occur. However since it is below scope or immaterial, it is ignored in order to maintain these companies as clients.
Also many small audit firms may take on companies who receive funding from undisclosed sources that are under the scope of testing as well. Many of these firms will turn a blind eye in order not to ruffle any feathers and keep their clients.
I think it's more common than people think. Accounting firms can get away with this, and I consider it shady business.

Back on topic: I thought Anna Kendrick was less annoying in this movie than the majority of her other work. Almost pulled off a believable cost accountant IMO.

February 27, 2017 at 5:44 pm #1499988VDPParticipantI watched this movie over the weekend and really liked it. Granted it was a little long and slow in spots, but I plan on watching it again during my study break after taking REG on March 10.
February 27, 2017 at 6:07 pm #1500006AnonymousInactiveHow does my post in any way constitute being a troll? Any opinion that is different from the mainstream is considered a troll? That is very immature, apparently you do not know what a discussion is.
February 27, 2017 at 6:37 pm #1500027SeattleCPAParticipantIs Bricknell a troll? I had no idea… In any case, I'll get back on topic too.
Quite coincidentally I watched the Accountant (my second viewing) over the weekend too with another CPA who hadn't yet seen it. Second time though, I still thought it was great. The interview with the farmer and his jewelry manufacturing wife was hilarious. The guy's office in the strip mall was classic. Ben Affleck needs to make the sequel.
Only slightly off topic: Another funny accountant video: Andy Richter in Andy Barker PI:

Fraud is prevalent out there, but if it's under the scope of an audit, the accountant won't report it so they can keep business. How is this even a surprise? Also, did you not realize that the entire movie The Accountant is based on a small fraudulent CPA firm? Lol what a joke.
https://quickbooks.intuit.com/r/trends-stats/fraud-statistics-every-business-should-know/
“Although it’s certainly important to have some anti-fraud controls in place, not all anti-fraud measures are created equal. For instance, the ACFE found that, out of 80% of the fraud cases reported, 42% of frauds were detected via hotlines (versus only 3% through external audits). If you’re undecided about which anti-fraud measures to enact in your company, consult a fraud examiner, anti-fraud consultant or auditor for guidance on the controls that will be most effective for your company.”

I liked that it had the drama and intellectual content I enjoy, and it had the action my boyfriend enjoys, finally a movie we both enjoy! He and my roommate now make jokes regularly that as soon as I pass my last exam I'm going to become a super smart, rogue, killing machine, as if it's a skill package given out with the license. I'm ok with that as it's better than the “nerd” stereotypes they used to pick on me about.

Ex. all the stuff he did for criminal organizations. I felt there was a lot of loose ends. Bad acting and bad directing.
