The everything CMA thread

    Hi all,

As I began to shift my focus from the CPA to the CMA, it became crystal clear that there wasn’t anywhere else quite like A71 for CMA candidates. So, since there appears to be enough interest here on the site, I thought I would start up a CMA specific thread. I plan to condense exam experiences/study group/questions etc. all in here unless/until Jeff decides to break out permanent specific threads. So, allow me to kick it off:

My study materials: Gleim full package (online, audio, test bank….bookbag…hah).

Test dates: Exam 1-May 4th Exam 2-June 29th Took both exams in one window for the discount and because I think I can swing it

Study plan: Beginning next week, 2 units & 20 hrs/wk for five weeks, one week for final review. One week break & then repeat for exam 2.

Looking forward to anything anybody wants to ask/add. I definitely plan to come back and post exam experiences, study questions and anything I can help out with for those of you interested in or studying for the exam.

One quick piece of advice: For those of you in school (at least 6 hrs per semester) you can qualify for the student membership & exam pricing. It turns out to be a 70% discount vs. full (about $300 vs. $1000 for both exams in same window/entrance fee & membership fees). Definitely take advantage of that if you can!

Good idea. Jeff, do you mind if we sticky this as a CMA study/info group?

Taking a few weeks off to get caught up on some things at work and then I will likely start it. I have been thinking I wanted to do this since I work in industry and then for a while I thought no way am I going to tackle another exam. However I think it will be very beneficial for me. Having the CPA designation is great BUT for what I do the CMA is more closely related.

Problem is if I tell my family or friends that I am considering this they will think I am nuts so I will likely not tell anyone until I am done with this, if at all possible, except for my A71 family.

Kricket, don't mention a thing on facebook, lol. I don't want my hubby and daughter to want to leave me!! Right now they think they are going to get more spoiled if I am not studying.

Of course I can't say for sure yet having not yet begun myself, but from all of my research I don't think It's anywhere nearly as crazy as the CPA. I think the weekly time commitment might be similar (~20 hrs) for a 6 week prep time and but with only two exams you can always stretch it out a little bit and reduce the weekly time commitment if needed. Still, how in the heck are you going to keep it a secret? Seems impossible!

I will do a modified version of Jeff's ell plan. I can probably get an hour at work plus lunch, and then a couple hours in the evening after everyone has gone to bed. they are usually in bed around 9. I'll probably tell hubby but i am waiting a while. Don't want to “shell shock” him!

    This might help your decision.

I got it for free from Wiley (part of promoting their CMA review course). It is a salary survey done by the IMA comparing those with no license, CMA, CPA, and both CMA/CPA. It is worth looking at if you considering the CMA.

Ha! I'm not an alumni by any means (still studying for 1st section of CPA) but I have always had a goal to get my CMA as well. I think a thread specific discussion would be great.

I havent started thinking about the CMA, being only 1 test into the CPA…what benefits to having both would there be? (besides being more employable and thus demanding higher salary?)

I'm considering studying for the CMA. My main concern is the amount and type of work experience needed for certification.

BEC: 66,66,66 (didn't study seriously for these first 3),73,73,71,84

I passed all parts of the CPA exams but it seems likel I'm having trouble on finding a job. It's been 3 months now since I've started submitting my resume but to no avail. Now I decided to start reviewing for the cma exams and make use of this bum time of mine.

This thread is a good niche to share thoughts about the exams.

    God bless everyone!
