The Struggle

I’m half-way through with the CPA, REG and BEC nailed. Failed AUD last quarter, so I skipped to FAR as it seems more cut and dry than how Audit seemed more subjective. However, I’m really struggling with continuing with all this. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has issues with time management/studying in general. But also, my company could literally not care less if you have a CPA or not. There’s no incentive (yeah if you get it they’ll cover expenses to keep it) but culturally, they don’t give you raises or advantages for having it. I have the two commonly said hardest exams to go through, and I’ve got 5 chapters in FAR left to finish the book and start NINJA notes.

Just can’t get myself to go forward with it. Not even sure that I may want to stay in accounting, as I’m getting bored with monthly close cycle accounting. Any refreshing thoughts?

Just ask yourself why do you wanna be a CPA? (Money, career opportunity and so on). 50 % done… great job, I would keep pushing myself especially when 50% done. If you don't like your job just quit with CPA you can work in any industry that you like.

As someone who has gotten 50% done twice then bailed, take it from me…FINISH!

I'm in the exact same position as you, private industry, company couldn't care less about CPA. I have 10 years experience that are far more valuable than the CPA designation. However things come up, bosses retire, new bosses come up and only want CPAs. If you decide to continue a career in Accounting (something I continue to question myself) you'll feel much more comfortable being a CPA in the industry.

I work in tax, so I feel like if I can pass Audit (really worried about it), I'll basically be a CPA finally.

Just keep on pushing. You might not like accounting right now, and who would doing monthly close outs and stuff, but you need to see the big picture, think long term.
The CPA will open more doors and give you more job security. Keep on grinding, you are halfway there. Bang out FAR and then get back to AUD and just get it done and over with.

CPA isn't rocket science, but it does require one to make sacrifices. The nature of sacrifices and for how long absolutely depend on each individual. W/ that said, you are the only one that can decide. If you don't think the benefits of CPA license outweigh the sacrifices you have to make, don't go through it. If you decide it's worth putting 3 letters next to your name, just do it.

Stick with FAR and just grunt your way through it. AUD depends on you knowing the standards that FAR is based on. If using NINJA MCQ read everything that comes up with the answer to better understand it. There are no shortcuts with these last two exams. You are halfway through and that is quite an accomplishment. Now finish. Good luck!

Honestly I think you will regret it down the road if you give up now. You're so close. You have already gone through the audit material once and you're almost through the FAR material. That's the hardest part of the CPA is the initial learning phase. When I failed BEC and restudied it, it was significantly easier because I didn't have to learn everything from scratch. CPA might not be important to your company but we move companies so often these days. I have lost out on multiple jobs because the interviewing company demanded the candidate be a CPA. If you weren't so far along, I would say, sure – don't proceed but you are really so close.

Sounds like you are bored at your job. Get the CPA, take your years of experience and get a GREAT job. If the CPA is so unimportant to your company then they should easily be able to find another employee lol

Remind yourself why you started and don't be so hard on yourself. When is your next exam? Keep studying consistently and don't burn yourself out. I just took FAR today and the mcq felt pretty straight forward. I feel like having a general understanding of all topics especially the larger ones, then that should be good enough. They can't go too deep into anything really. It's only 4 hours long! That being said I'm not surprised if I have to retake it again. So glad I won't be studying for a while. Busy season is here…
