Unbelievably Frustrated

    Hi everyone,

I am currently in the biggest rut of my studying era. I have BEC next Saturday and have been somewhat studying for the past week and a half. My problem is that every time I try to read the Becker book or do multiple choice questions, I become frustrated that I am not picking it up quickly enough.

I have friends that have passed BEC and say it is the easiest exam, but I do not seem to pick the material up as quickly as they do and now it is about to bite me in the butt in 11 days.

Did any of you feel this way during BEC and still pass? I will continue to fight through the frustrations, but it is certainly overwhelming for me.

I've been there. It's incredibly hard to find the motivation to study WHILE trying to minimize the pressure. Add to it, people, who know which section you're scheduled for, say said section is easy.

You've gotta just block out the noise.

You may also benefit from a different perspective of the material.

Without knowing which BEC topics, try these videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/TRUTonyBell

    Good luck. You'll do fine

While I haven't studied FAR yet, BEC was by far the toughest section I've studied for. Regulation wasn't too bad, actually found a lot of it interesting. Audit is by far the easiest section to study for IMO (hopefully won't be eating those words in August) – it's very straight forward and logical. What I find hard about BEC is how unrelated the sections are to one another. There's no flow to the material which can make it hard to retain the information. I just kept practicing until is started to sink in. I got REALLY frustrated with the material a few times, but I just kept at it and it ended up paying off in the end. Just keep grinding and hope for the best, but also know that you're not the only one who hated BEC. It may be shorter than the other three books but it is plenty difficult.

It's funny how everyone finds different exams to be very difficult or the least difficult.

I found BEC to be so much easier to study for verses AUD. The economics section of BEC was by far the easiest chapter I have read to date. And, once you practice the Memos enough they are relatively easy points. However, I did really well in all of my Business 101 and Econ classes as an undergrad, so BEC was somewhat of a Review. But, the IT/MIS section was pretty bad bc I had never studied that material.

AUD has been very challenging for me because I have never, ever seen 75% of the material and there are very few calculations.

Anyhow, for BEC you should know Cost accounting and IT very well. And, be very familiar with the ratios and calculations for Finance. Practicing the calculations and knowing the numonics helped me a lot on my BEC exam.

    Goodluck!

@reallytired – Remember that you are going for a 75, not a 100. If there are areas you are struggling with, it's not the end of the world. I spent almost an entire day on 1 aspect of BEC the weekend before my test and it ended up not being tested at all. I SHOULD have read a much easier chapter (Information Systems) during that time and I would have likely added 10% to my score. Make sure you know what you know very well and know a little about the rest of it and you will be fine. Go get 'em in 11 days 🙂

I have taken BEC and AUD so far and can say that BEC was not easy to study for-there is so much information from unrelated topics and some of them are challenging (cost accounting). Like one of the previous posters, I found AUD the easiest to study for. In week 3 of REG and it is challenging but not impossible so far. Just stay disciplined you can do it!

I'm with you. I'm definitely not one of those people who understands this material naturally. You could beat me with a stick labeled with journal entries and I still wouldn't get it. I failed BEC twice, and passed AUD & REG on the first try (I'm still trying to figure out how). I also have an MBA which led me to believe that I wouldn't have nearly as much trouble with BEC than I've been having with it, meanwhile I took one Audit course and passed AUD. I'm thinking that the new test format will actually help me because I hate MCQ, and at least sims give you some room to get at least partial credit. Like the other posters said, don't focus too much on one area and block out what other people say — super hard to do but I find when I go into my study bubble and the rest of the world becomes nonexistent — that's when I feel the most calm. Keep pushing, the little “lightbulb” moments will come, and make sure you recognize your breakthroughs and reward yourself! 🙂 Good Luck.

Like someone above mentioned, I spent a lot of time on my BEC exam figuring out formulas. I even dare say that I mastered the formulas, but guess what, I got hit with COSO and IT. You will never know everything, but believe in the work you put in everyday. You have already come so far, do not doubt your ability to be great!

@reallyTired , you have passed the beast ( F and R ) ,BEC would be breeze for you.Take my words.Nothing compared to FAR and REG ).
Going by the Becker's materials you will feel overwhelmed at BEC.
    My tips for BEC :
Write memos as per format (search this forum ) and practice that ,15 marks would be bonus marks.
Just go through the formulas ( BEC formulas ) which you can search on this forum .Just go though it and you should be fine.
Practice Ninja MCQ , you will be pleasantly surprised how Ninja MCQ will boost your confidence.
Whenever I feel I don't know anything ,I do MCQ on Ninja and after 100 MCQ I don't feel low.
Ninja is best for AUD and BEC.

For me BEC was the easiest.
I recommend you learn basic economics (supply and demand), cost accounting, variance, and IT. For written exam, you should practice to write a few memos and use key words. BEC is not that bad compared to the other three sections. Good luck!

@Reallytired the truth is that BEC blows. I hated studying it the most, so many formulas and managerial accounting concepts. I also definitely struggled with getting pissed at myself for AUD, FAR, and BEC lol… Missing 10 multiple choice questions in a row made me want to punch the wall every time.

The issue is setting a goal. When you tell yourself “I'm gonna finish all of B4 today” or “I'm gonna do X multiple choice questions tonight” you can only think about finishing. Be honest with yourself and learn the concepts. for me what worked was the following: Once you feel like you can explain topics (IT topics, job costing, etc.) to someone who knows nothing about accounting, then you are ready for the next topic.

    AUD - 89
    BEC - 81
    FAR - 80
    REG - 78
    Free af

    Ethics - 90

For me, I thought the study material was much more trciky then the exam. I remember telling friends that I had no clue how it was the easiest exam while I was studying, some of the material just doesn't click with me, and throw in ratios, and you can get totally bogged down!

Luckily, in terms of the old format, the actual exam wasn't nearly as bad as working through becker. I think the written portion is where you can get easy points, unfortunately its not weighted as heavily as it was in the past.

Good luck, we're pulling for ya!!!

    AUD - 80
    BEC - 82
    FAR - 78
    REG - 89

    FAR - 78
REG - 72,74,71...please just go away REG nobody likes you!
    BEC - 82

You all are amazing, thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement! I am glad to hear that studying the exam is trickier than taking it because that is what my issue is right now. I loved studying REG, hated FAR and AUD, but the vast amount of BEC stuff is what is overwhelming.

I just got home from work and will be busting out some cost accounting tonight. My coworker passed the exams about a year ago and she was telling me how awesome it will be to take BEC and (hopefully) be done studying for these nightmares forever!

Bec is annoying, but you got this! My best tip for the actual thing is that educated guesses will be needed for IT and Coso, everything else is straight forward.

    CPA (2017)

    REG:  75

    BEC:  76

    FAR:  77

    AUD: 78

    CMA (2019)

    P2: 360

    AUD - 1st - 60 (12/12), 61 (2/13), 61 (8/13), 78! (11/15)
    REG - 55 (2/16) 69 (5/16) Retake(8/16)
    BEC - 71(5/16) Retake (9/16)
    FAR - (8/16)
