vitamins to improve mental and physical health

I was reading on a blog of a senior accountant the other day and he suggests taking fish oil and vitamin d supplements in order to reduce fatigue that one feels around 2pm everyday and also to improve memory. He seemed pretty convinced about it so I went out and got some myself.

Has anyone taken vitamins to improve energy levels or health before and felt better after taking them for a few weeks? These things are hard to measure because there are countless articles on the internet and I’m not sure if they actually work or if I’m just tossing money away to the vitamin industry

I have a very close friend who several years ago began a diet of fatty foods, fish oil and vitamin D. Everyone thought he was crazy and that this was very unhealthy. 3 years later he looks great, feels great, is less depressed, sleeps better at night, doesn't snore anymore, and doesn't have problems with allergies anymore (he struggled for a very very long time with allergies). Essentially he cut out any white sugars. My point is that it started out as fish oil and vitamin D. Some could argue that yes, it works! From the look of your post, you wrote it around 4am??? Could that be why you're tired? Go to sleep! šŸ™‚

B-complex has helped me a lot through stressful periods.

The only anti-stress method I know is called regular physical activity.

@valueofnothing, do you crash with the Good Morning Pill? I have a zero caffeine diet. I don't drink coffee, soda, anything with sugar. I feel like this GMP could give me the jitter bugs then crash

@peanut realistically, you're probably right – if you're not used to caffeine at all, the pill might not be for you. the potential for jitters/crash are definitely less than with a beverage, as the caffeine is absorbed more slowly and the effects fade more slowly, but if you're not used to any caffeine at all, it may be a bit much for you.

B-complex helped me when I was working 60 hour weeks. I still found time to work out and felt a lot less stressed out. A lot of that may have been due to the exercise though šŸ™‚

Few of my friends use Ginkgo Biloba to help the memorization. I personally don't like the future effects though, so I don't use it šŸ˜€

@swancpa hehe that's exactly what i wanted to hear ;). and no, i'm on the west coast so i went to sleep around 2am. i know this is a bad habit..because going to sleep tonight and waking up at 6.30am tomorrow for work is going to be very painful )=. oh well, i'll survive since i have wednesday off and friday we have our holiday party hehehehe.

but thanks for your input! i guess it's worth a shot.

exercise is very important and many people swear by it, i just can't simply make time for it right now = it's work and then hit the cpa books..

CPA-Go, what are the future effects of Ginkgo Biloba? I have actually never heard of it until you posted, I just did some brief research. Could only really find side effects relating to dizziness and upset stomach. Is there something more serious?

    @peanut

I've tried Ginkgo and it does nothing for me. And it has no side effects.

Find out from your doc and a blood test at your annual physical what you need/don't. A common deficiency is natural Vitamin D via sunlight; a stroll outside during lunch can take care of that, as well as daily supplements. Also, if your food diet is skewed, Vitamin B12 and other supplements might be recommended.

    Couldn't pass again!

@peanut – you can avoid the fish oil burps by taking Flax Oil Supplements instead of the Fish Oil…they have the same omega's in them and do the same thing just one is way more pleasant that the other I have found.

I take twice the daily recommended value of fish oil. 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night. It helps with my dry eyes. I also take magnesium to help with muscle cramps (during roller derby), which has helped substantially. Then a multivitamin too.

@Peanut – I've noticed that if I have a shake that has milk in it in the morning when I take my fish oil, I don't get fishy burps. I've tried eating cereal with the same amount of milk but that doesn't work.. I think it's something about the consistency of the shake. Then I take the second set of fish oil right before bed so that I don't have to worry about the burping. Today I cut out the milk (trying to cut calories) and I only had 1/2 cup of frozen fruit, 1/2 scoop of chocolate whey protein poweder, and some water. I had one fishy burp but that's it. Not too shabby and I cut out the 42 calories that would be in the 1/2 cup of milk I usually have.

@pacific1, thanks for the tip I will definitely try flax oil.

@kandisjoy, You're only healthy girl!! It must be because of all the time you have to spare not that you're not studying šŸ˜› lol. Milk kills my guts šŸ™ I've noticed if I take the fish oil on an empty stomach I don't burp, but if I take it after a meal I burp out of control!
