I am from AK, so we have the 150 credit hour requirement. I am 21 credits shy of 150, but I have all the required credit hours (24 accounting, 3 business law, etc.), all the required work experience, etc. So it appears that I need to take 21 credits of whatever I choose just to fill the void. I work FT, married, father of 4 (5 and under), so I have much better things to do than take misc. easy classes that have nothing to do with the CPA profession. I could take classes that are relevant to my field…but at this point I really just need the designation. Experience is the best class I can take.

Has anyone seen a successful effort to see a waiver of the education requirement? Worth pursuing?

No I've never heard of a state waiving the 150 requirement and don't think they're at all flexible on that. I know you don't want to take the additional credits but I'm 99.99% sure you will have to. I did it while I was working full time, 2 kids and taking the exams its do-able.

I thought Alaska required a candidate to be within 18 hours to sit for the exams?
Either way, it is worth looking into if Alaska has a timeline for you to complete the 150 hours after you pass all 4 exams. Some states will void your credit if you haven't met the 150 hours within 60 days of passing your first exam.
Short of becoming a resident of the U.S. Virgin Islands (only licensing board without the 150 hour requirement), there is no way around the education requirement and I have never heard of a waiver. Most MBA programs are around 36 credit hours and MAcc programs around 30 credit hours. It may be worth it to go the MBA route vs taking “Bowling 101” at your community college.

@drumstick – You need to be within 18 hours of your undergraduate degree. I already earned my degree. No they do not have a timeline after I pass. I can complete the credits at my leisure.

@Missy – Thanks. I know I can do it…just don't see how it is beneficial. But whatever, I will just power through it.
