What development opportunities have you attempted… besides MBA and CPA?

Does anyone else get this question from managers, interviewers, other folks that want your time? It gets me really irritated.

At work a common question that I would get was what I was doing to professionaly develop myself. When I mentioned working on both my MBA and CPA simultaneous I would be questioned what else… and him/her then following up with encouragement to attend online training classes because I don’t want to have nothing to write down in my job performance review.

It appears that no one is aware that there is only so many hours in the day. If you are doing your work and studying appropriately, there should not be a surplus of time available.

I got that question all the time when I was in public accounting. I would take the online classes that they offered at least once a month. I usually signed up for the ones that were live and I didn't need to take a test afterwards. I would just loop them on one screen and just made sure I answered the poll question. Unfortunately saying you are studying for the CPA exam or taking MBA classes does not matter. They want job specific trainings and they still expect you to find the time. At least they do not have expectations of some involvement with a women's initiative group. That was another expectation at the Big 4 I worked. Had to find time to be involved with an organization.

    I guess sleep is overrated.

The response I see is “everyone is busy”

I just don't get it. I easily spend 10 hours on each class per week… Why is a 1 hour online training class a month spent half listening given more regard than the 40 hours I spend a month per class?

Let me not get started on the additional organizations that I am encouraged to join… and then those organizations do the same thing pushing assumption of additional responsibilities.

I am in a totally different boat. I work in industry. Company is public though. There are absolutely no pressures for accountants to be successful. I am the only one (as non-manager) pursuing CPA and higher degree. I love my team, but sometime it is depressing. Some people don't even know what CPE is. I can't wait to get my license, so I could consider moving on.
