So, I passed the CPA exam. Ready to move on to a better job. However, what if I’m not as smart as I think I am? My first job was at a public accounting firm and and it was over my head. I don’t want to get into the same situation again.
I want to challenge myself, but not take on something I am not ready for.
What if I’m not good enough? Anyone have similar thought patterns?

I think about this all the time. Then I realize most other people don't really know that much either. Then you run into those dudes that know ev-er-y thing. Those are the ones that I just concede I'll never know as much as.
You passed a pretty tough exam. It doesn't necessarily mean you're smart but it doesn't mean you're not smart either. Some people pass this thing based on just true grit, others because they're brains, and then some of a mix. I think it doesn't really matter what category you fall into, you've proven to have some promise in the work force.
Remember some people have a ton of experience that has led them to appear this “smart”. Think about how well you'd fair if you tacked on all that experience to your brain.
December 31, 2014 at 4:32 pm #637213AnonymousInactiveI'm 6 months into public accounting and get the feeling all the time. In fact, I straight up botched a walkthrough interview with the client and confessed that I don't understand the process at all. The client just laughed and said to just fake it until you make it.
Best advice I've ever gotten.
December 31, 2014 at 4:35 pm #637214Determined CPAParticipantNinja – don't be silly! If the CPA taught you anything it should be “smartness” has nothing to do with it. It's determination. If you want to succeed, you will!!

You are smart enough! Just remember that you cannot ever just walk into a job knowing everything and start working. If they expect you to, then it's not a place you want to work. I tell my new employees that it will take at least six months to understand what is going on. Every workplace is different with their own procedures…give yourself some time to learn their way of doing things and ease up on yourself 🙂

December 31, 2014 at 4:43 pm #637216CPA50ParticipantRocky – You got this! Eyes and ears open to learn all you can. Watch how other people do things. Read constantly, watch training videos. And, don't be afraid to make a mistake. I make mistakes on a daily basis. I just did a very complicated spreadsheet for a case that took me six months. The client found some errors at the end of it. I thanked her for pointing it out, because in the end, we are all working toward the same goal. When it was completed to her satisfaction, she told me that her previous forensic accountant never was able to get it to work out to a point where it was explainable to a judge. She said mine was crystal clear. So, make the mistake and learn from it (that's the key).
And it that doesn't help, try this…

December 31, 2014 at 4:50 pm #637217taxgeek83ParticipantI have that feeling all the time – somewhat of a confidence issue. As time goes by, however, I am finding that the old adage “You know more than you think you know.” holds true.
The best thing I've learned in the last few years is that it's okay to not know the answer, and it's okay to be wrong now and then. It took me a long time to learn that, and it's still something I constantly have to remind myself of, especially when I'm working with CPA's and my managers. As long as you're willing to put the work in and take responsibility for your mistakes and learn from them, you'll be fine. 🙂

December 31, 2014 at 5:57 pm #637218northernlightsParticipantWe all feel that way sometimes… at least I do, so I'll speak for everyone. And for not knowing enough, or being smart enough… There are people at my firm who have been CPA's longer than I have been alive, and in meetings they sit there and debate each other and don't agree on what the right answer is. So they don't know everything either. And it doesn't help that tax law and audit standards are constantly changing and evolving, so what is right one year might not be right the next year.
So just get used to CPE, and learn that its ok to ask questions and not know everything off the top of your head.

But I explained to her that my accomplishments (that I have achieved so far and my future dreams) has nothing to do with “intellect” but that I am a VERY HARD WORKER and I am DETERMINED to be successful in my endeavors. I am no smarter than the next average person; but I do worker HARDER than the average Joe & Jane 😉

Some 4.0 students (not all, just some) don't get hired because even though they are book smart they are basically lazy and only want a guaranteed W-2. Some book smart students are might-have-beens. But employers aren't as interested in someone who is smart as they are someone who is a hard worker. A lazy intellectual has plateau'd long ago, but the humble hard worker keeps progressing.
Be encouraged! Passing the CPA exam says something big about your work ethic.
January 1, 2015 at 2:54 pm #637222AnonymousInactiveI've wondered that too. Last month, I started a job as a Controller. When I told one person in the field whom I respect that I was interviewing for this position, her reply was “You're not qualified.” That shook my confidence a lot… She has never been a Controller and has worked throughout her career in large businesses (international, thousands and thousands of employees, etc.), and this position was at a smaller company (college with approx. 200 full-time employees), so I tried to convince myself that my future employers and I knew more about what the job entailed than she did and that, if after discussing it with them, I felt like I could do it and they offered it to me, then that should be good enough. However, even though I told myself that, I still was shook up by it…so one night I asked my dad (who has become something of a career-mentor) what he'd do if he was offered a job that he might not be qualified for, and he basically said, “If they'll give it to you, and if you think you've got a shot at it, then with hard work you can figure it out.” It might mean working 12 hours for an 8-hour job, then coming home and researching and learning off the clock for a few hours, but it can be done.
I've now been working as the Controller for a month. Truth is, I can handle it, no problem. There's things I have to learn, but that's true with any job. I have the knowledge needed coming in and I have the work ethic to quickly gain the knowledge needed after arriving. For someone with 1 year in public and 1 year as a clerk, this is a HUGE step, but with confidence and hard work, anything is possible. The funny thing is that so far, I haven't encountered any major “problems”, because accounting is kind of the same regardless of your position, just bigger numbers in some jobs than others; however, if I'd have listened to that lady's advice and the self-doubt that it created, I would've turned the job down and still been a clerk – capable but lacking confidence.
So, grit your teeth, and believe that you can do anything you are handed to do…then do it!
January 2, 2015 at 2:23 pm #637223Rocky123MemberThank you everyone for your encouragment. I don't give myself enough credit.
Passing the CPA Exam does require some level of intelligence. Couple that with the hard work and dedication I took to passing, I can handle a new challenging job.
Just not sure where yet.. I'm sure it'a good time to get hired in public accounting. Tax season is approaching.
