Which Tax Return Preparation Software to Use?

I was wondering which tax return preparation software accountants are using lately?

I’ve never prepared tax returns as a business, but studying REG got me motivated…

    Do you buy Turbo Tax?

Is there a website to lease tax software by return?

    What’s the best software?

I've used Turbo Tax deluxe for the past 5 years or so…really like it for the price. Get it @ Best Buy here in a month or so…

Turbotax costs like $50…how much do the others cost and do they have the option of doing other people's returns? Turbotax doesn't.

The one I use is expensive but it's a professional software that allows you to prepare individual and corporate returns. Unlike TurboTax, you definitely have the option of doing other ppl's returns. I pay around $800 for mine, but I run a tax business…so it's feasible for me to do so, for others who don't have a big clientele…not advisable…better off with Turbo Tax.

Just curious – how many tax returns do you do on average…do you do this out of your house? Are you self-employed? I've thought about doing something similar…

I'm self employed. I have my own storefront…which helps because if you're doing it out of your home…you're vulnerable also ppl are skeptical about coming to you. Believe me…i tried that and didn't work out. I would say if you have a solid 300 or so clients…either individual or a combination of individual and corporate…time for you to get out of your home office.

I've seen a lot of walk-ins and a lot more new clients since I opened a storefront office.

That's interesting…good for you! I'm sure it has it's own challenges…being an entrepreneur is exciting, but stressful all at the same time.

Ah yes…very much so. Makes it difficult to concentrate on studying for the exam. When you're with an employer you can still clock out…with your own…there's no clocking out.

I just left the Drake update seminar. They are so customer-focused and worth every penny. We pay around $900 a year. We use their tax and payroll softwares. I work with my father and we do a little over 500 tax returns a year. He's an S-Corp and has been doing taxes almost 40 years.

Do you know of any tax preparation software that leases their software per return submitted?

$900.00 is not bad if you know you're going to get at least 10-12 clients to break-even.

I guess you get more on business corporate returns about $300-$500 or more.

TurboTax has software to prepare other people's returns. it is obviously more expensive than buying software just to prepare your own. i do think you are limited, though, to the number of tax returns you can e-file

    AUD - 84; REG - 90; BEC - 79; FAR - 75; ALL DONE!!

Drake also has a per return option. I don't know about the others.
