I was wondering which tax return preparation software accountants are using lately?

I’ve never prepared tax returns as a business, but studying REG got me motivated…

    Do you buy Turbo Tax?

Is there a website to lease tax software by return?

    What’s the best software?

CPAWannaBe and wahoo, thanks for your insights on Drake.

I purchased today the Drake special 15 return package for $304.95 with tax. Once I re-order 3 tmes (spend $900) the software is mine so I can file unlimited federal and state returns for any years up to 2009.

This is great because yesterday I got a client who needs his returns done for the last 5 years (2004 – 2008).

I was very impressed with the Drake service. The software is awesome too.

I've used ProsystemFX and Lacerte and Lacerte is way better…but for myself I use turbotax freefile and then use the CALfreefile website for state. I don't itemize because I don't own a home. I don't do any friends or families returns.

I use Lacerte Tax Software. It is very expensive, but also very good.

I use GoRS. It's what we use for our clients but we're allowed one personal return for ourselves.

304.95 for 15 returns from Drake sounds pretty good…

Prosystems Tax (CCH) is really confusing. I have heard on Linkedin that Ultratax is where it is at.

At my work we use GoSystemRS. It's pretty solid, but I feel as though there are always issues with e-filing rejects near the deadlines. As far as the actual interface goes, I like it a lot. It's very clear and organized.

For individual purposes I use freetaxusa.com. I normally help my family file all of their tax returns (4 in total). You can create an account for each return on the website. As long as you have a different email address you can keep creating different accounts for different people. Federal filing is free and each state is 9.99 to file. You also have the option of only filing the federal return on there, so I usually go to the state website to file our state returns because it's free. Freetaxusa is okay (it's by no means comparable to the actual tax software I use at work), but hey – the price is right!

I use Prosystem Tax for corporate, estates, trusts and 5500's and Lacerte for Individual Returns. Opposite of folks above, I prefer Prosystem to Lacerte. I don't like how changes in Lacerte cannot be undone, so the minute you change data it's gone.

I suppose the other caveat should be that I like corporate tax more than individual, so perhaps there is a built in bias in favor of Prosystems as well.

Yes, turbo tax is one of the best software but its little costly why you don't outsource your business

I only file my own taxes and I'm a total nerd, so I use the IRS free e-file software and do them myself each year. It's very easy to use. All of the tax forms are fillable and it does the math for you where applicable (doesn't actually do your taxes for you of course). I could use Turbo Tax for free since I have a simple return but I want to be able to do them myself.

I've used TaxAct for my personal return and UltraTax, Proseries, and Prosystems FX for returns when I was working in public accounting. Of those three Prosystems FX is by far the best. Haven't worked with Lacerte so can't speak for it.

As a tax practitioner, I couldn't imagine recommending Turbotax professionally. I've used it personally for many years, but it could not work for my clients. That is because you can't get to where you want to go in the tax return without starting from the beginning of their interview process. Their model is based on a once-through, question and answer flow. But as someone who knows exactly what I want to do and exactly where I want something to go, this approach simply doesn't work. Especially since it's not uncommon for me to get information piecemeal from clients.
