Yes having passed the CPA exam will definitely help finding a job but it will be another top level if you actually have the CPA license. So my recommendation is to get a part-time job too for your work experience requirement. Therefore when you pass all your exams, then you can become a CPA right away and find a new much better job.

If you study hard, I am sure you can pass these exams even if your accounting background is not that good. Most study courses will teach you what you need to know to pass the exams. Also, you might want to start thinking about how you would fulfill the work experience requirement to get your CPA license.

@nickbuko, yes working at a small company as an accountant should be adequate per statement below. However, you need a CPA to verify your work experience.

“Pursuant to Board Regulation 18VAC5-22-100, prior to applying for a license, an individual must have been employed in academia, a firm, government, or industry in any capacity involving the substantial use of accounting, financial, tax, or other skills that are relevant, as determined by the VBOA, to providing services to the public or to an employer for a period that is the full-time equivalent of one year. Whether other skills are relevant shall be determined by the VBOA on a case-by-case basis. Self-employment does not meet the definition of experience in accordance with § 54.1-4400, Code of Virginia.

@LonelyRonPaul, Those benefits sound really great to me especially the 4 weeks PTO and 15 holidays! At my previous job, I only got 2 weeks PTO and around 10 holidays. I get bored easily too so maybe government job would not a good fit for me right now. It could be a good fit later down the road where I start having my own family.

I was going to ask you a question in my previous post but I forgot lol. You said you worked at a local government. How did you like working there? Working in government was another option I thought about because of their benefits and job security.

I am kind of in the same boat like you. I just got my CPA license last week and have a few years experience in industry. I am currently unemployed and looking for opportunities in public accounting. If I cannot find anything in within 2 weeks then I will also look for non-public accounting (which I am sure I can get it in no time). I just thought that working in public accounting will help me get exposed to various industries and it's just good to have public experience. if I don't get public experience then I will be fine too. I only got one phone interview before I have my license. After I have my license last week, I have two phone interviews and one in person interview set up for this week and next week. Having CPA does help to open doors for you.

I have been thinking about MBA as well but probably not anytime soon as I just completed the CPA exam. Has anyone ever thought about Master in taxation? I think master in taxation would be very beneficial if you want to open your own practice and it sounds cooler than MBA hahaha

If you have not purchased ninja book, then you should buy it. Ninja book has helped me passed AUD along with Ninja MCQ and Notes. Ninja book will give you the core study for AUD. Read the book and take notes. After each chapter, you should do a couple times 30 question MCQ session for that chapter only. Do this until you finish with all chapters. Then for the review, you should do 30 question MCQ session for all the chapters. Do MCQ until you get to 80%. Also do some sims practice. Good luck!

Hi @rtalfson, I am in the same boat. I'm trying to get into public accounting but recruitment is slow at this time. So did you get into a national, regional, or local firm? And which city are you in? Thanks!

@almond, I am interested to hear your take about CPAs who don't have public accounting experience. Would a CPA who has no public accounting experience hold the same marketability as a CPA who has public accounting experience? I have finished my exams and will be certified soon. I am currently unemployed and plan to seek a job in public accounting. After a few years, I plan to move from public to industry. I want to work in public only so that I can put public accounting experience on my resume for future job seek. What do you think? Should I get an employment in public first then move to an industry or just go straight to an industry?

For me BEC was the easiest.
I recommend you learn basic economics (supply and demand), cost accounting, variance, and IT. For written exam, you should practice to write a few memos and use key words. BEC is not that bad compared to the other three sections. Good luck!
