Just do the best you can! I have a friend who schedule FAR and REG for the same window, and basically realized it was too much so he focused solely on FAR. He went into REG with about 5 hours of preparation, and got a 26. He went on to pass the exam within the next year. I'm pretty sure Jeff has a similar situation where he took an exam just because his NTS was expiring.

All that to say, no one is going to care what your scores are. No one will ask you if you passed on your first attempt. Just do you best and take it as an opportunity to learn and prepare for the next one!

Our scenarios were very similar. I started studying for FAR way too far in advance, and was moving very slow because I was finishing up school at the time. I ended up finishing up the material about 2 weeks before my exam. Because I moved so slow (over about 4 months) I really had to review well that last 2 weeks.
My recommendation is to hammer MCQ. If you can, I would get access to NINJA MCQ a or another test bank. I am an audio/visual learner as well, and taking notes has never really helped me learn much so I basically didn't take any notes at all and I don't think it is necessary if you know how you learn best.

100% go back to FAR. Also, don't go into it thinking you only need 5 more points. What you did on your first exam means nothing towards how you will do on your next one. Good luck!

I have one piece of advice…and don't take this the wrong way…but once you decide to dive back in I would try and use the forum as limited as possible. There are definitely good uses for this form (asking for help to explain a topic/answer to certain question, getting advice, and study groups) but I personally found that early on I was wasting a lot of my time that I should have been productively studying, by spending it on the forum. Good luck!

@Another72 it actually appears I was incorrect, you can submit a statement of verifying CPA form for Ohio, which according to the wording – “You should submit this form to a CPA who is familiar with your employment for completion of the appropriate information.” This would only be if your supervisor on your record of experience form is not a CPA.

I have never worked in public accounting, but in my opinion, if you hate something why would you go back to it?

It is definitely going to come up in an interview why you were only there for 3 months, but in my opinion it is better to be honest and tell them you decided to take time to focus on the exam. Best of luck.

I would look at your state requirements. I'm in Ohio, and I know that you have to have a direct report CPA sign off on your experience, definitely can't have an external audit firm sign off.

I would double check your states requirements, and if you aren't in one of the state's that allows NASBA's experience verification, I would get to work on finding a job where you will direct report under a CPA.

I can't say whether Ninja is good enough on it's own, but I know I wouldn't have passed without the Ninja MCQ. I used MDS CPA Review which did an excellent job with their notes and lectures, but lacked on MCQ software. This is where Ninja saved my butt.

I recommend taking FAR first, because for me it was the hardest, but that is just my opinion.

Imposter syndrome here as well lol. I only have 3 years experience right now as a staff accountant, and currently job hunting. No one expects you to know everything just because you are a CPA, as long as you are capable of researching and finding the right answer. Good luck in the job search!

I agree with most of the people above, all have very good input.

I think for me, my wife knew that stuff like rock climbing and going to the gym were things that helped me decompress, so she was willing to spend a little less quality time with me for a year to help get it done. I HIGHLY recommend people to still stick with at least one of their hobby's during the process. You can't study every hour of free time that you have, it's just not beneficial.

Just try and be supportive, I agree that generic “you can do it” and “oh, you will be fine, you are smart” are annoying things to hear from people not involved in the process. My wife did a good job of saying stuff like “I know this sucks” and honestly that made me feel better than the “you can do it”.

That is honestly how I felt after every single exam. My best advice is to not second guess yourself at all during the exam, flagging a ton of questions and going back and changing answers I don't think works out very well. If you don't know it, give it your best guess and move on. You just have to trust that you put in the time and effort and your instincts on the correct answer are correct. Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice! I think I am leaning towards pursuing the opportunity at the regional firm in audit, but going to continue to take time to think and pray about it.

As a side note, our global controller went to bat for us and got my entire team 6 months severance, so leaving before March 31st would be really hard at this point.
