I love these conversations, always I insightful. I spent almost a decade in the Marines and have gone through many growing pains as I tried to become a better leader. First off, as a manager, it doesn’t matter… that answer would be whatever is going to result in increased productivity. As a leader, very different from a manager, your job is to hold yourself to a consistent standard for others to emulate. Continue helping and giving credit, the aggregate of your character and product will be shown in the long-run (as will Her’s). My advice for the future is to have witnesses and make subtle comments about team effort when presenting projects.

Go with the lower of her hotness and your knowledge of Reg (scale 1-10) and do that. Good news is you can still date using this formula, but probably less attractive dates until you know more.

it might sound time consuming, but the trick for me was google. You’re right, I feel like Becker teaches at a professional level as though we’ve been familiar with these terms through years of experience… what I did was whenever they said something that I wasn’t comfortable with, I’d google it. At first I was googling a lot, but soon the google searches decreased and I was very comfortable with the material. There is no “trick;” no easy way out. Just have to find how to blend your materials teaching style with your learning style (whether that be writing it all down, googling, or whatever your thing may be).

WACC was a focus for me, I definitely recommend knowing WACC forward and backward. That was probably what saved me.

Weird, above post shows me as a different account – not sure why it logged me on as NWat. But yes, that was the message I received, it took a couple of days. I don’t understand your post though because you said you passed… what are you hoping to achieve if you passed your exam?

My recommendation is to budget for 200 hours then gauge your understanding as you progress. As you progress, if you find yourself really grasping the concepts then reduce the hours. Focus on completely understanding the concepts and remember, the cpa exam doesn’t care how many hours you studied, but only how many correct answers you have at varying levels of difficulty.

I think one of two things are possible. Possibility 1, you did not pass so they are extending a free retake to you due to the circumstances. Possibility 2, for some crazy reason there was corrupt data in your testlet or something went wrong and they cannot determine an accurate result, which is why they won’t release the score and ask that you retake. It is certainly frustrating being in your predicament, I would recommend continuing to study for FAR as it sounds like a retake is what they are requiring.

Make a few Flashcards on major topics from each section. You understand that way you think so when you study the Flashcards later it connects more. Making flashcards can be time consuming so definitely focus only on prioritizing what you think are key points or likely to show up on the exam.

I don’t like to do them by hand (I study on the go and like my flashcards on my phone). There are several useful apps, one such app is called flashcards deluxe that is extremely intuitive and well put together.

    Good luck

DocJ, totally understand what you’re talking about. I took Far and failed with a 58. I studied for it and expected better than a 58, almost thought I would pass it. Key for me was to accept it and move on. I slowed down on the material, and went through it all again with a strategy of periodically going back and reviewing what I had already gone over. With Far, I found that one to be voluminous and that was what made it so hard – there is just so much! I thought I wasn’t going to be able to get through the exams… how the hell could I pass FAR after doing so bad? I put my emotions behind me and focused on learning the content again like it was the first time and to not rush it. Keep your head up, you are going to make this happen and you are going to be a CPA.

    Rust78,

I am really sorry to hear your situation, it sounds like you have earnestly put forth the effort. You’ve probably received advice previously and anything I say will just be echoing what you’ve been told already. I get that you feel broken… completely understandable. I want you to do me and yourself a favor though, keep pushing and once you achieve this, and you will, it is going to be that much sweeter. Give this everything you’ve got until You take this again, put aside any distractions, make sure you have a great support circle, and let’s get this done. I know you’re going to make it, keep your head up.

Edit: it sounds like you should already have this in the bag, and would pass 7/10 times at least if you were to take it over and over; the mission now to ensure the next one is a pass is to study deeper and try to learn what you don’t know, spend the most time and get cozy in the areas you’re most uncomfortable with. Aim for a 99 on your next go.

    @Jasondonofrio

Thank you very much! Your experience sounded very close to mine, was holding my breath for you! Was very happy to see you pass then only hoped I could somewhat mimic your success, looks like we both pulled through.

Well, that’s it! 87 on Reg wraps it up.

I began this journey 4 years ago, almost exactly when I had my wife and a good friend urge me to go to college. I was active duty Marine Corps planning on 20 years, so at the time I didn’t care much about college, but went with it anyway. I didn’t want to spend a lot of time in college, so I decided to get it done quickly and I attended at a hyper accelerated pace, and took clep tests on the side and finished college in 2 years and did surprisingly well.

About the time I was coming up on college graduation, I injured my knee pretty bad and I was medically separated from the Marine Corps. Not sure what to do with myself I decided to jump on the CPA journey and network like crazy to find a job. I was extremely fortunate as I was able to land a job with PwC to start getting work experience to CPA (only spent a year here though, hours mixed with study schedule was rediculous). Just 4 years after deciding to go to college, I am sitting here now reflecting on the journey that has led me to this monumental accomplishment.

I never thought I would go to college, no one in my family has and academics were never prioritized in my family. I viewed college as reserved for a class of people that is above my status, not for someone like lowly me. When I passed my first CPA exam, that’s when I decided this was an inevitable journey and I will stop at nothing. I passed aud, failed far, passed bec, passed far, and just completed the journey with Reg. The Far failure (score of 58) came right after busy season when we extended our audit due to 2 material weaknesses, but made me question again if I was cut out for this. I locked down, left PwC and found a job with more flexible hours to allot me time to study. This last test I studied like a mad man, left the exam thinking I failed because of items I knew I messed up (sounds like a familiar sentiment?).

It’s done, I could not have done this without the support of my 1. My wife, 2. My friends and family, 3. My employer, 4. All of you beautiful people on here posting stories to keep me motivated.

For anyone still climbing this mountain, focus on what’s right in front of you and accept becoming a CPA as an inevitability.
