BEC - Feb 2016TonyaParticipantI took a break in 2015 after passing AUD and failing FAR twice. Last September I decided I wanted to give it one more honest shot. I HATE to study and the only thing I could MAKE myself do was MCQ's. I still had about 9 months left on Roger so I just did Roger MCQ's. I studied for 3-4 weeks for each section and I tried to make myself do 90% of the MCQ's which I never really accomplished. I would only do MCQ's I hadn't seen before and I would try to understand each one. I would do 30-100 a day depending on the section. FAR and all the calculations would be much lower while AUD I could go through pretty quick. I passed FAR in October and took off Nov and Dec due to the holidays. Started studying REG right after Christmas and took it and passed mid Jan. Took AUD (lost credit) in early March and then waited until the end of May for BEC because I hate waiting for my score and I needed a break from studying. Don't over stress it and you will get there.

But then I reminded myself I had “life” experience that counted for something. I would also always eliminate the answer/answers I knew were wrong and go from there. On FAR, if I knew something wasn't in the calculation but I wasn't sure beyond that I would take out the answer I could tell used that number or pick the answer that was another answer minus that number. I got creative at times but it worked. I also didn't stress myself out over HARD calculations. If I knew when I read the question that I had no clue what to do I would pick my first gut answer and move on. If I spent time on it then it was wasted since it was still just a guess but more so I stressed myself out which affected the rest of the test/MCQ session. Oh, and when doing MCQ's I always did the score as you go so I could see the answer and process it right then.

When I let go of that attitude and started looking at it like just any other assignment I was able to slowly get there. And I also told myself I was studying to pass, I wasn't trying to be an EWS recipient. Maybe in my younger years 🙂

I would really try and grasp the concept on each question. I would take the time to think about it and try to commit it to memory. Also, due to the limited time I spent studying I wouldn't even see the same question twice so I couldn't remember them. I would always select questions not seen and only do 5-10 at a time. I couldn't do much for longer than that. I was able to get in some time at work so that helped. I would try to make myself log on and do 5 MCQ's every hour. My goal was to try and get through 90% of the MCQ's for each section. I think I only hit that goal on one test either Audit or Reg. I felt like I knew I wouldn't read or watch lectures so I was wasting my time stressing about that, I could, however, do MCQ's in small chunks so that's what I focused on. I figured I didn't need to waste time on something that I really didn't want to do, I spent more time dreading it than studying. I finished my Masters in the Spring of 2015. It was HARD to study at that time. I was SOO burnt out on school, studying, etc. I think the break from mid-2016 to the end of 2017 really helped. I know that's not possible for everyone though. I was also in tax from 2011-2017 but HATED it, I finally got a chance to move into an audit role last summer and that is what helped to re-motivate me.

BEC - Feb 2016December 9, 2015 at 6:49 pm in reply to: 3 tests in one window aaaannnnddddd it didn't happen, haha. #751259TonyaParticipantI am attempting the same this next window. I failed FAR in November with a 74 (studied about 60 hours over 3-4 weeks). Just found out I passed Audit with a 75 (15 days of study, about 29 hours of study). I am studying now and plan to retake it Jan 9th. I then plan to take REG at the end of Jan or 1st week of Feb and BEC at the end of Feb. I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. I want to be DONE by the end of window 2 and this will give me a chance to retake any I fail. I know it may not be the best way to do things, but I think it can be done. We don't get too busy at work (tax senior) until mid-late Feb. And that's small firm busy 50 hours max not Big 4 80+ busy.
Best of Luck with your retakes!

BEC - Feb 2016TonyaParticipantDo you all reset your MCQ's when restudying for a section? I have my weak areas I'll focus on Gov and Framework according to the score report, but I don't want to do only those sections….I feel like I need everything. I may just re-write the notes for those sections.

BEC - Feb 2016TonyaParticipantBecause I am CRAZY and I just want to be done ha ha. I am re-taking FAR the weekend before I leave on the cruise. I plan to do some studying on the cruise and hopefully be ready to take either REG or BEC by the first week in Feb. Then take the other on the last day or two of testing. We really don't get too busy until mid to late Feb, so work shouldn't be too bad. And by busy I mean working 9-10 hour days during the week and 7-1 on a Saturday. NOT Big 4 busy.
So with that being said — do you think REG or BEC would be easier to study without MCQ — I guess which one has the least amount of calculations involved?
