BEC – Nightmare Experience

Just got back from taking BEC today. Feel mentally exhausted.

I walked into the exam feeling well prepared. There was not a single test bank question that I wasn’t able to answer. I was quietly confident.

First Testlet: Breezed through it in under 20 minutes. I am almost positive that I got every single question correct.

Second Testlet: WOW!! Absolute monster. About 50% of the questions were as difficult as the most difficult questions in the Wiley end of chapter book questions. This testelet took me around 1 hour to complete. Some computational questions took me 5-7 minutes to complete. I slowly methodically worked my way through, making educated guesses on questions that I was unsure about. After this testlet I started do develop a pressure headache due to excessive concentration.

Third Testlet: Not as bad as the second, but definitely much more difficult than the 1st. Again, I just worked my way through methodically, relatively confident that I answered at least 70% correct.

    WC – Easy…

So, I have no idea how I did. When I left the testing center I was mentally exhausted. Today has been bitter sweet because I also just discovered that I passed FAR.

The funny thing is that I finished FAR with 45 minutes to spare and was 100% sure that I had passed. I honestly cannot say the same about BEC.

This exam truly is an emotional roller coaster. Another few weeks of waiting and stressing await me….

    Good luck to everyone else!

if you feel the 1st testlet was that easy, you're probably in good shape there bub

Don't Worry about it. I studied very little (35-40 hours), albeit I have photographic memory and I am a pretty good test taker.

Took the test, first one was Med, Second Med, Third Easy. Those are estimates. I didn't know one of the answers to one of my written questions and BS'ed it.

    Made a 76.

    Bec-76 (7/14)
    Aud-81 (8/14)
    Reg-82 (7/15)
    Far- 82 (10/15)

Moral of the story, don't do your CPA while working in Big 4 Public Accounting.

    @Achckn440, @UM1868,

Thanks. If I'm lucky enough to pass BEC that will make it 2/2. A nice milestone, and makes the burden of passing this thing seem a little less intimidating.

This sounds like a totally normal experience. In order to use the word “Nightmare,” you must have experienced one of the following:

    1. Horrible IT problems at Prometric.

    2. Horrible accident on the way to test that results in injury.

    3. Horrible weather events that leave you stranded at Prometric.

    4. Toilet failure at Prometric.

    5. Accidentally sitting for the wrong exam.

    6. A Farty McFartison in the seat next to you at Prometric AND a patient from the local TB clinic on the other side.

    7. Exposure to Ebola virus at Prometric.

    8. Not taking a break due to time constraints and then having an accident during the exam (see #4).

    9. Going into labor during your exam.

    REG - 94
    BEC - 92
    FAR - 92
    AUD - 99

@Charlie – I took my exam yesterday and feel like I had the same exact experience as you. I'm pretty sure I got every question on the first testlet correct and I flew through it. The next two testlets were just as you described. And the WCs were easy for me as well. I also SWEAR that I had one, possibly two, questions that didn't have correct answer choices. Pretest? Or I was just completely off-base. So at this point I have no idea how to feel about it. People keep asking me if it went well and I have no clue what to say. This was my second shot at BEC and this time I incorporated Ninja MCQ. I think it helped me a lot. But at this point, I'm clueless as to what my score will actually be.

    AUD 86

    Folks

Where was the focus on calculations or just tricky theory questions that made it hard. Any particular topic that was hammered a lot or were all the topics evenly covered.

I only remember seeing one IT question where I was completely unfamiliar with the answer choices. I thought there was a good mix of material and hardly nothing that I wasn't at least a little familiar with. By saying the testlets were “difficult” I mean that the questions were much more specific. Not necessarily more calculations, there was a good mix of both theory and calculations. They were difficult because they required more analysis (thought) or knowledge of more specific details about general concepts.

Thanks for the explanation. I am using Yager and Wiley + WTB only for BEC. If not enough please do reply back to this post.

Agree with @vic1982. They were not so difficult in the sense that there were too many computational questions, the difficulty lay with just how SPECIFIC the questions were. I've used Wiley Books for all parts so far. I think it's pretty accepted that the Wiley end of Chapter book questions are way more difficult than the actual exam…

However, for my BEC exam experience, around half were as difficult or more difficult than the most difficult Wiley questions.

One question was a mathematical setup question and I'm sure none of the answers were correct (I have a Masters in Stats/Math).

    Bizarre experience…

    @Charlie

Any hints about the mathematical setup question. Just want to get an idea, without going overboard with the disclosure.

@h0wdyus, would be impossible to study for. Don't waste your time on such “fringe” questions. There were only a couple. Would have as much chance guessing them right as actually solving them.

@ Charlie – Thanks for your comment about the mathematical setup question with no correct answer. That could have been the same one I experienced. At least now I don't think I'm crazy…

^^ I had the same thing happen on my FAR test. There was a mathematical quesiton I KNEW and my answer was not in the choices! I did not spend too much time dwelling on that. You are not crazy! Not sure why they do that? haha

    AUD - 73,91
    FAR - 79 - Thank you God!
    BEC - 73,79!!!!
    REG - 92 whatttt??!

I used Becker review + flashcards, Ninja Audio, Ninja MCQ supplement on BEC and REG.

    Done! Praise God!

I thought the test was overall hard. I had a ton of IT and variance questions and a couple that I was like WTH did this one come from…….I took it this morning and feel like I was beat up…..
