Big 4 Congratulations Party

Hello everyone. I got an offer at a Big 4 to start in Summer 2015. I got invited to a celebration party where I get to meet my coworkers. The problem is that I am currently in another state visiting my mother and I don’t know if I should drive the 9 hours back to go to this event. I got the invitation when I was 6 hours on the road and it was under a weeks notice. Obviously I have a good excuse, but I think it is human nature to be skeptical and people often don’t even believe the true sob stories.

My offer is dependent on maintaining a good academic standing and it is at will for both parties. It looks like the firm is dropping some decent money on this event. I was wondering if I should go to this event at all costs? It would turn my two week vacation into five days effectively(2 of which would be driving 9 hour days). I would appreciate some perspective.

As a former Big 4 intern and current Associate I honestly don't think it would matter at all if you send a nice, honest email explaining why you can't make it.

Just accept the offer (assuming that this is your intent), and then reply to the invitation by politely explaining on why you can't attend, and you should be fine.

Back when I was recruiting for Big 4, I definitely skipped out on one of their summer event (which was before my start date).

100% not worth the 9 hour drive. I wouldn't even drive 2 hours for some event where they care less if interns with offers come or not.

calm down, dude. I promise you the firm is not that sensitive that you're going to be out of town.

I know this is a rough way to put it, but if your offer gets withdrawn, it's not going to be because you didn't come to the party.

I agree with what you guys said. Ironically I decided to go. I think it is important to keep up my presence, and to begin networking with my coworkers. Supposedly the best way to stay productive and get the work you want at the Big 4 is by networking with the right people. Many of the new hires may not be the “right people”, but they may later network with the “right people”. I am not an intern, but a person who is in their early 30's who received a full-time offer after being unemployed for over a year. I plan to do everything that I can do to succeed at my new job. Even the small things that make very little sense.
