Can you score stronger on MC for BEC, and still fail the exam?

I just received my score report, and I have comparable on everything and stronger on IT and Financial management. On the bottom of the page, it shows stronger on MC and weaker on simulations. How can anyone score stronger on MC, and still failed the exam if this exam is 85% MC. I got a 74 and wanted to appeal my score, but Colorado is one of the few states that do not allow anyone to appeal a score. I did not have time to finish one of the simulations, but this is ridiculous.

    Corporate governance(16-20%) Comparable

    Economic concepts & analysis(16-20%) Comparable

    Financial management(19-23%) Stronger

    Information systems(15-19%). Stronger

    Strategic planning(10-14%). Comparable

    Operational management(12-16%). Comparable

15% is a lot, especially when the passing score is 75% and you failed by 1%.

This kinda proves wrong everyone who says don't practice the BEC writing portion. You are the second person I know on this forum who failed BEC because of the writing portion.

    Hey Martin,

I'm sorry to hear about what happened. However, if you think about it, scoring comparable across all MCQ and SIMs would put you in the 75-80 score range. I'm guessing with your MCQ score you were already hovering in that area, albeit a little higher. Since the writing portion is 15%, a 74 isn't too implausible then.

I'm horrible at writing under pressure too, my mind totally goes blank! I'm sure you'll do great next time around.

I only had 30 minutes to finish the simulations, so I guess just like in the other parts of the exam, the simulations are crucial. As if understanding BEC was not already hard enough.

I've never seen a score report (I failed FAR but have not received anything from the state of AL as to my score report, but I know it was the SIMS that caused me to fail), but from what I understand, comparable means you were comparable with other candidates (in other words, you were average). I would take that to mean maybe around the 70's (just guessing)?

Stronger seems to be more vague, but you only got stronger on two categories, and I would think stronger could mean anywhere from 80% and above (just guessing here).

In order to pass the BEC exam with only multiple choice, you would need to make about 88% on the multiple choice (88% x 85% of the exam = 74.8, rounded up to 75). By the sounds of your score report, since you only got two “strongers”, I would estimate your multiple choice score to be in the upper 70's, let's say 78. So that would give you a total score of 66.3 without factoring in the written communication tasks (78% x 85%).

Assuming a 78% multiple choice grade, you would then need to get about 9 points out of 15, or 60%, of the written task communications. You have three written tasks and one of them does not count, so for the two that count, each one is worth approximately 7.5 points.

It sounds likely that the one you did not finish was one that actually counted, so that probably really hurt your score (depending on how much you had written down). Only one other written task would count.

It sounds like you just had really bad luck. Sorry about that (I had similar bad luck on the FAR exam. Although I haven't seen my score report, I know that the SIMS were the sole reason I failed. I felt pretty great about the multiple choice).

    AUD - 85 (8/30/2015)
    FAR - 73 (10/13/2015), 85 (2/29/2016) (AND DONE!)
    BEC - 83 (11/04/2015)
    REG - 81 (11/30/2015)

jcbcpa, according to the report, comparable means that you scored from 75 to 80, so stronger means that you scored above 80, and this is the reason why I'm so mad at myself for not finishing all the simulations. I would think that one of the simulations I did finish did not count towards the final grade. I know you are right when you crunch the numbers, but damn, these people are tough when it comes to grading. If I got stronger on MC that means that my score was at least 81% on overall knowledge of the material.

I got stronger in every topic besides IT and Financial, then I got a comparable in WC. But my score was barely decent, so I don't think stronger means a lot. I would leave 45 minutes for WC. I think it's the perfect number.

The score reports aren't worth anything unfortunately. Nobody has ever been able to decipher them and find rhyme or reason to it.

I believe comparable means that you scored comparable on those sections against candidates who actually passed the exam.

    FAR - Passed (82)
    BEC - Passed (76)
    AUD - Passed (89)
    REG - Passed! (81)
