CPA question – why don't they nationalize this?

They opened international testing centers for foreigners who have to select a state to become certified in only to practice in their country as a CPA.

I’m a CRP, which is national and really do not understand this CPA state by state process. It doesn’t seem to be feasible in today’s globalization and international demand to become a CPA. The CPA is ideal in countries such as Australia and the UK. It’s very funny how you go into NASBA and AZ is one of the states who offer this but in AZ Board site, not fully updated, they require one to be a resident in the state.

Sadly thats an easy question. The states won't give up the licensing revenue!

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

The states can unify all requirements and in the end it won't matter in which state you practice 🙂

Thankfully it's not like the Bar Exam where each state is different.

I've also always wondered this. Wouldn't it make sense to have one, national accounting board and one set rules regarding education/work experience requirements?

    FAR(11/14/11)- 92
    AUD(01/04/12)- 91
    REG(05/30/12)- 93
    BEC(07/21/12)- 88

You want the Federal Government running CPAs? 🙂

    AUD - 79
    BEC - 80
    FAR - 76
    REG - 92

No, but what's wrong with a board that has representatives from all the states? Nothing says the federal government has to run it.

    FAR(11/14/11)- 92
    AUD(01/04/12)- 91
    REG(05/30/12)- 93
    BEC(07/21/12)- 88

50+ people trying to agree on something like licensing? I can't get my 4 oldest kids to agree on lunch 🙂

@Yvonne570…It will be nationalized in year 2312, three hundres years after the world ends…Seriously, I live in Texas. At this point, I am happy if Texas become one of of these NASBA states

Lol, I have my CRP license and this is handled through the ERP. Perhaps the NASBA can handle the CPA license process or the AICPA- not the Federal Gov't – and definitely not SEC (or the DEA). LOL. There is a method to the madness. Just the current system will not work very well with international sites and foreigner CPAs. Same laws, same test, almost the same requirements across the board.

    Wish list:

NASBA handles CPA licensing. If you want to run a business, you still have to get a business license to practice in a state.

NTS – 18 months (get rid of the 90 day 6 month)

Education requirements – all the same pretty much – they want 150 (ok)

    Experience – eliminate altogether

Wait, I'm sorry. Yvonne, you think the experience requirement should be eliminated? The only thing that would accomplish would be to reduce the value of the license and flood the market with unqualified CPAs. I wish they would increase the experience requirement to something closer to 5 years. There are way too many CPAs out there who dont know their head from their you know what and a big part of that is lack of experience. Education and test taking only takes you so far. 5 years of real world application? Now we are getting somewhere.

Nationalize… agree. Increase experience to 5 years… AGREED!

I think the credential loses its umph when a kid straight out of college, that has had nothing to do but study, while living at home with the ‘rents is now a licensed CPA. Sure, pass the exam, but know a little bit about the real world too.

I think the experience requirement is nothing in comparison to the 150-credits one.

And I'm sure that in a state like IL, where there's no experience required, there aren't more CPAs.
