I have two questions about FAR…

◆ I know this really depends on each person, but on average, how long does it take for a beginner in accounting to study for FAR? I reserved about 2 months to study (4-5hr everday) and wondering if that’s on-average…

â—† For anyone who have exam experience, any topics in particular that I should focus on (ex. Governmental Accounting, IFRS, etc)? It’d be great if you could name a few.

I’ve been studying FAR since this month, and I have the exam coming up in early January so just wanted some advice.

    Thanks!

150-200 hours for me. I didn't really keep track. Know the ones you mentioned and NFP and bond&lease amortization tables and all JEs. Anything is fair game though.

2 months is around how long I studied. I would make sure you know governmental accounting, but the topics candidates see vary a lot from exam to exam.

    Mommybear + Austin,

Thanks for your replies! I'll make sure to jot down the topics you mentioned.

Anyone else with advice on study hour + major topics to study for FAR would be greatly appreciated 🙂

    Agreed on the study topics!

As for hours, I thought FAR was my most likely retake (until I got to BEC, that is), as I am not an experienced JE person. My study plan was for nearly 8 weeks. I probably studied 1-3 hours each weeknight and 4-8 hours each weekend day (it was the lower end of the range when I first started, and at the higher end of the range closer to test day). So that's like 170-180 hours total? This doesn't include time spent listening to Ninja Audio while driving. Great product for not much money.

I ended up with an extra week and a half due to technical issues at my center on my originally scheduled test day, but I didn't really use it since I was so burned out on the material. So make sure you don't overstudy and run out of steam.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

    4Corners + Kimboroni,

    Thanks for your advice!

I guess IFRS, Gov, NFP, bond+lease accounting are major topics to cover.

For all those out there who passed FAR in recent years, anything else I should add to the major topics on the FAR exam?

Can you elaborate more on what you mean by being a beginner in accounting? How many accounting courses have you taken? Have you learned about defined benefit plans or investment accounting?

Also, how strong is your English? It may take longer for you to get through and understand the material if English isn't your first language.

I think it'll be best for you to look at the table of contents for each chapter and write them all out on a Word Doc. Then skim through each section and then note which sections you've covered already before in school.
