Job offer advice

I just received a call from the only firm that extended me an offer. But she didn’t offer me what I wanted! It’s a mid-size firm and they have 2 locations. I interviewed at that location close to my house (about 10-15 minutes away) for full-time audit January start. She called me back and offered me full-time audit SEPTEMBER start and the location on the other side of town! About half hour drive not considering traffic and/or snow. And I would still have to go there and meet them. I don’t know if I want to drive that far everyday especially as the weather starts to get worse (snow). Second I feel that shes only offering me this because she took all the good candidates for the location by my house and is giving me what’s left. (I doubt that’s true but its how I’m feeling now). Third, what am I going to do until September I haven’t worked in about 4 months. I will have 150 credits by December and have one section passed, one pending, and two to take this November. It’s my second year going to recruiting season so the majority of the firm know who I am. So if I don’t take this offer I probably will end up looking for something in industry which I know nothing about. However, I don’t want to loose the opportunity. I need advice on whether or not I should accept it?

It's your ONLY job offer, and you're thinking of not taking it?

Accept it, like today. Then you have until September to search for another position and interview for other positions, and also focusing on passing the exam.

As a recruiter for our firm, we've had candidates accept offers in November, and then a few weeks before they start in June, they call and say they can't come and work for us for whatever reason. It happens. We're not happy with their decision, but it happens.

agree, take it and keep looking for something better knowing that you have a job in the bag regardless. If they are hiring you 10 months out they should know there is a risk you will find a better job before then

Don't let the difference between a 15 minute and a 30 minute commute make your decision. If you're going into audit, you're going to be driving to client locations as well so get comfortable driving in the snow! (And realistically in most places the chances of a snowfall during commuting hours work out to about 4 days a YEAR! Massachusetts had 18 snow events last year and 75% of them occurred on weekends, late at night, between 10a-5p. It's not like driving in snow 60 days a year.)

If public is your preference and this is your second round, I'd accept it.

I'd take it. You really don't have a leg to stand on at this point.

Besides, a half hour commute is a breeze. Wait till you move to the suburbs and have to commute into a metro. That can turn what is otherwise a 20 minute drive into an hour or more, no problem.

If it makes you feel any better your first job is the hardest one to find. After a year or two, recruiters will be calling you at your office with jobs.

ya id say just take it. and it wouldn't hurt to let her know u prefer the other location. maybe she randomly chose you to go to the other one.

And plenty of folks who can't find a job would KILL to be in your position. You have an offer in hand. Accept it. Complaining about the only job offer you have by saying “But she didn't offer me what I wanted!” or “the office is on the other side of town!” makes you come off like a whiny little brat. I should know as I have 10+ little nieces and nephews who love to whine about the most silly things.

If you're going to stress now, in this stage of your life, about this isn't what you want or an extra 15 minutes on your commute, well life is going to throw many more difficult pitches your way.

So, surely by now, you've taken our advice and called her back and accepted the offer. =) How did it go?

    1. Commute: Suck it up, plenty of people have bad commutes, it is what it is. Its not fun, but its better than no job.

    2. Even if you are a runner up: who cares?!

    3. Doesn't start until September: You'll find the vast majority of entry level public accounting jobs start from Aug to Oct.

In other words: deal with it.

Thanks everyone I appreciate all your feedback. I will accept the position and your all right its better than nothing! And many people don't work near their homes anyways. She said to call her back Monday after I've had the weekend to think about it. She said I still would have to go their and meet everyone but it wouldn't be an interview type setting. My other question is where should I look for work in the meantime? I would like to start someplace in January. I feel if I go interview for a place and tell them I have accepted a job offer to start in September that will be a negative. I'm also not going to lie and say nothing. I'm checking my school career links website, Indeed.com where else can I look?

I would spend time searching for any other job that might be more appealing to you, but if you want to make some money, why not work retail for 9 months in a store where you would use the discount – perhaps for business casual or business professional clothes which you will need for your new job. Or perhaps waiting tables at a higher end restaurant? This would give you the opportunity to hone those interpersonal skills and make you more comfortable talking to complete strangers, executives, etc…

You never know though, your dream job may open up between now and then – and you just call the other firm back and say you've decided to take another position.

I like the high end waiting idea.

You'll make more money there than you will as a Staff Accountant.

    No BS.

You could do H&R block probably January through April and temporary accounting jobs are a dime a dozen.
