Just took FAR: One big question!

So I just took FAR yesterday. I have a pretty important question which after researching I haven’t really gotten a definite answer.

I went into the exam with the first testlet being easy to okay. Second testlet got substantially harder and then the third testlet was a mix. I got to the TBS with a hour left which at first I thought was plenty of time. However about halfway through the questions I realized I was running really low on time. I ended up rushing through the second half of the TBS. Luckily I managed to get the research question correct (which I know really isn’t worth much though). After the exam I came out not knowing how to do one TBS (which i’m hoping they dropped since I haven’t seen that topic since I took a class in undergrad). And I know I got only partial credit on another TBS.

So here’s the issue…. I left the exam and when I got home I realized an error I made. So lets say for example I got a TBS problem that required journal entries. The TBS provided 4 lines for a journal entry however the journal entry required may only require 2 lines. To get full credit did I need to put “No Journal Entry Required” or something to that extent in the two blank journal entries? Or is leaving the last two lines of the journal entry blank okay?? I read in many places that you should put No journal entry required but from what I’ve gathered it really applies for a question or date within the question that requires no journal entries at all.

Also if you are supposed to leave it blank and if you put no journal entry required in the line would that be okay?

I know you’re not supposed to dwell on the CPA exam after you’ve taken a part…. But this error is bugging me because had I been more attentive to detail or not rushed through I would have caught the mistake (or hopefully not a mistake) I made.

    Thanks for the help!

I think you just leave the extra lines blank. We just have to wait and this wait is killing me!!!! This could be my last one! I am soooooo ready to be done.

I'm positive you leave them blank. I ran into the same problem on the exam as well and questioned it myself. Say if you had 4 lines and it only required 2 entries. It will allowed me to put No Entry on the 3rd line, but it doesn't allow No Entry on the 4th line. Judging from that, I'm sure that No Entry means no entries at all. Don't let this add to the anxiety of score release. 🙂

    Thanks for the support guys!!

CPAski – Without giving out too much details, what would you think you would do if there is a journal entry requiring 3 lines but 4 lines were provided? And the fourth line had an option of No journal entry required?

I mean there are certain situations where you need 3 journal entries to balance out instead of just 2.

I'm assuming from your example that the first 2 entries are made, then a third you would put no entry required and the fourth you would leave blank. However, in that case you would make an assumption that the journal entries are only in pairs? Also when you said that “I'm sure that No Entry means no entries at all.” then why would they they allow it on the third line? If you made the entry for the first two lines and then put no entry on the third line that sort of just completely contradicts what you did on the first two lines. This is again assuming all 4 lines relate to one answer / date of entry.

What about if you made 3 entries and the fourth line had an option for no entry required? would you put that or can you just leave it blank?

Sorry for over analyzing your answer but I just want to understand it 🙂

This question came up several months ago, so I e-mailed the AICPA to ask them what to do. Here is their response:

“It doesn't matter what order the Debit/Credit responses are entered in as long as the proper corresponding debits and credits are provided with each response. “

I read that as, “Make sure your journal entry balances, give us the right numbers, and the right account numbers, and you'll get it right.” But that is just my .02 worth.

Kcoolby: I'm not sure why they would allow No Entry on the 3rd line and yea it doesn't make sense. This is just what experienced while taking FAR. To me it looked funny to have No Entry on 3rd line and leave 4th line blank. I just left both blank. If your entries balanced and correct accounts were used just as Kricket as mentioned, I don't see why AICPA would dock you points for leaving lines blank when your suppose to use No Entry.

This is related question but different. I realize that no journal entry required means no journal entry at all. However if you have already clicked on an account name into an extra line. I could not find a way to clear the extra line so was left with having to put no entry required in the extra line under the journal entry. I realize now that backspace might have worked to clear it out but it was not a click and type cell but more focused on mouse selections and clearing isn't an option! Has anyone run into the same situation of wanting to clear out an unneeded but already clicked on line for journal entries like for example on the sample Sims you do if you click on the extra line and put an account and later realize you don't need it but can't find a way to clear it out have you put no entry required in the extra line and still been okay. Is the grading software adaptive enough to handle this type of situation since it leaves limited ability/communication on how to clear out the unneeded line? The grading of the Sims on the sample test does not give feedback on this and just has and answers tab on the sample test Sims.

This happened to me this weekend…except I accidently pressed the delete button and the words went away! Had I not accidently pressed it, I would have probably just put “no JE required”. I am under the impression that you work your way toward earning points, and you do not lose points from incorrect responses. If that is true, then you're ok!

@KDunc- you just highlight the cell and press delete/backspace on your keyboard to remove an entry you don't want.

Is it really confirmed that research simulations are weighted less than other simulations?

Thanks I love numbers! That makes me feel better. And going through the sample test now I see that backspace works, I just didn't think of that when it was a click and drop down answer even though it seems intuitive looking back. I guess it was somewhat related to being frustrated with the Wiley simulations always grading me wrong for format issues.

I wish the exam administrators were more transparent about how simulations were graded, especially considering how this question manages to pop up in any shape or form. Does anyone know if you can input the formulas in the cells to get the correct answer without having it graded wrong? Or if you could get partial credit if the formula you inputted was partly correct?

@koolby… I am really impressed by your score. I am too scared to even start. I would like to know your study habits and also what tools did you use to score so well. Any advise would be highly appreciated.
