Just finished AUD and compared to FAR there were basically no computations. How does BEC compare to FAR as far as computations?

I took BEC yesterday and felt like it was around 40% computations. I can't recall now how much FAR was when I took it back in Jan.

There were a lot of computations in my study material, but not so much during the exam. You should definitley spend time on them because many people posted about how many computations they had during the exam. Easy points for memorizing a formula. Flashcards are the best for these. Have someone quiz you on them too.

I haven't taken FAR yet but I can tell you that I had 54 pages containing just handwritten formulas for BEC. Granted, the variance analysis formulas spanned a few pages alone as did some of the formulas from cost accounting, but there just seemed to be a massive number of them to memorize.

As far as formulas you need to know spanning the topics, from what I remember the IT/COSO section is the only one that doesn't have any formulas to know. Although that's replaced by plenty of definitions and the like in that particular section.

Try to find as many different sources for the formulas as you can. I had memorized all of the formulas in Roger, the NINJA Notes, some that had popped up as I went through the WTB, and those on the past few years of the AICPA Released Questions. Even after that, there were still more than a few on the exam that came out of left field.

BEC is mostly calculations. The only chapter that isn't heavy calc wise is the technology chapter. BEC is 10 billion times easier to handle than FAR, though. There are more calcs and conceptual material on FAR than BEC. With BEC, I had so much spare time to go over the material ad nauseam, but with FAR, I barely felt ready.

BEC has a lot of formulas! I haven't started studying FAR yet (yikes, 8/30 exam date) but BEC was no joke! I had written them out in my notebook and it was over 30 pages. On my exam, I had a nice split of theory vs math (prob 60% theory, 40% math). Regardless, you never know what your exam will have so I suggest knowing as many as possible.

My advice is as you go through a chapter, write the formulas you see down. Even if you don't study it right then. I found it easier to make my formula list as I went instead of one day sitting down and saying ‘ok, today is formula day'. Get a separate notebook for the formulas.

    Good luck!
