    Hey all!

Having been a CPA for a few years now, I have decided to start a side business tutoring college students in Accounting courses (I live in close proximity to a college campus) as well as offering in-person CPA Exam prep. However, my experience with marketing this type of business of limited. Do any of you do this, and do you have any advice about how I could start getting my name out there?

I live right by a College campus and tutor students. The best way to promote a business is by word of mouth in my experience. Generally, get one to two students, and if you are good, your reputation will be enough to get you clients. I never placed ads or anything like that because it's not like I have a marketing budget or department in my apartment lol, so I just tell students to recommend me to friends who might need help and I'm getting business. Also, parents are more willing to reach out for help for their kids than the actual student, so trying reaching out to friends with college age students, or networking with parents in general.

Go to the schools Business building or department and there is ussually a bulletin board where you can post flyers there. Also hang the flyers by doors and places students can see them. I'd make sure to ask for permision from the building first though.

Social media also helps to spread the word. Join an accounting group on facebook or twitter or linkedin or whatnot that is created by the school and just post that your offering tutoring.

In addition accounting students ussualy have an Accounting Society group that meets up reguarly, you can try to target that audience as well.

If you know any of the accounting professors you could let them know so they could provide your info to students who are struggling and want additional help. If you don't know them, maybe try to connect with them on LinkedIn and introduce yourself that way…

You can try websites like WyzAnt to find students, list the subjects you teach, the rate you charge and do on.
