So I recently accepted a job offer with a government entity over a week ago and recently a better offer was presented to me from a public accounting firm. I already signed my offer of acceptance with the government but now I want to rescind the acceptance and accept the public accounting job since it will help me out in the longer run. Has anyone had experience with this situation and how did they handle it? Is it wrong that I want to rescind my first offer and accept the better one?

I did the same thing. As long as you're professional in the way you handle it, you have to look out for yourself in my opinion. Employers look out for themselves, and you have to do the same. Just try not to burn any bridges in the process.

Agreed! I did the same thing but for an internship. I accepted an offer from a large regional firm and then rescinded and accepted a big 4 offer when it came along. I didn't feel bad about it at all. These companies are huge and will have no problem filling an opening 🙂

I've only ever done this once, and with a private company. They dont like me too much anymore. It being the government I imagine you could get audited for a few years so keep your taxes clean 🙂

They may have a sore taste in their mouth regarding you in the future, but it's your career. It's better to let them know now that you have a better opportunity rather than leaving 1 year from now. That is, if you feel guilty. I hear some people are afflicted with this… 🙂

Honestly, you have a better offer. Take it. You may feel bad about it, and guilty about making them start over in their hiring process, but you still need to do what's best for you.

Would you stay in a relationship with someone if you knew you didn't want to be with them?

I'm in a similar situation right now and at the end of the day I considered the qualitative factors, like, cultural fit, the job description's match to my career goals, etc. Don't let a few thousands sway your decision. But beyond a few thousands quantitative analysis becomes paramount.
