Accountant by day, dancer by night

    Hello,

I got a gig as a go-go dancer starting next month. I’ll be working in the weekends in June, but July/August is busy time – so I’ll be expecting weekdays and weekends. I will be performing the typical moves of a male dancer (except with undies). How will this affect my reputation at work – is something I’d like to find out.

i won’t be telling anyone. If info leaks, will this affect my reputation at work?

A little background: I’ve passed all my CPA exams and have been with the firm for just over a year now. I work for one of the best firms in the country in a major city. I don’t meet clients for the most part, as I’m in the tax department and sit at a desk all day (please shoot me!), so I don’t think my reputation among our clientele will be tarnished since they’ve never seen me. Most of my clients only know me by name.

P.S. Can someone tell me how to remove my pic? Thanks.

Sounds like some busy weekends. Make sure you're rested on those days.

I can't speak to the reputation part, but your avatar can be changed by going to gravatar.com.

This would depend largely on the standard cultural morals of the area you live in. I live in a very conservative area. The fact that I am living with my boyfriend and *gasp* am not married is pushing the envelope here. There's no bars in the area (closest we get is something like Applebee's that has a bar, but isn't a “real” bar) – heck, until a year ago, the closest place you could buy package liquor was an hour and a half away! So, if you were here, and say drove up to the bars in Richmond to dance on the weekends, it'd be seen very negatively and definitely could have an effect on your career. However, most of the country isn't this conservative. If you're in a work environment where your coworkers meet up at the bar after work to have a few drinks together, then working in a bar (regardless of the position) isn't going to be seen as negatively. You do, though, need to accept that if a coworker sees you dancing at the bar and enjoys it, they're going to definitely “connect” you at the bar with you at work, and may treat you somewhat differently. They'll probably feel more free to hit on you, for example, since when they see you after-hours, you're eliciting the cat-calls of an entire bar.

I'd think the biggest question would be how your managers would view it, and if it would in any way impact their decisions related to promoting you. That would be very dependent on the managers. Some may see it as a sign that you're a partier at heart and not really “into” accounting; some may see it as that you're multi-talented and enjoy some fun on the side. Since you're the only one here who knows your manager, you'd be in the best spot to decide how they'd be likely to view it.

Probably much less likely to be found out than a girl would be. I don't think it would tarnish your reputation per se, but if people do find out you're likely to be the brunt of many jokes and conversations. You seem like the type of person who is pretty laid back and good natured (aren't you the guy who took a nap between testlets?) So probably no big deal.

It would definitely affect your reputation if people find out. Not worth the risk if you are trying make partner/ have a successful career. That is something that will destroy your “professional image”. On the other hand if you aren't as worried about achieving a prestigious position within your firm then who cares. Odds are no-one will find out.

It would definately ruin your reputation if they knew. Period.

Sorry but this is the truth.

You have to ask yourself. What if most of your female coworkers decided to have a girls night out and went to the club you are working in.

It would be an awkward Monday.

I don't see a problem. Actually, I think it's pretty cool. I don't know of many accountants the could pull that off. As long as your work is up to par why should anyone care? If it does come up just own it. It's not illegal. It's badass.

Keep doing your thing Mambo Italiano.

Should people judge others based on what they do outside of work? No. Will some people still judge you based on it? Yes.

As for reputation, there is nothing to gain but everything to lose.

Thank you all for your advice. A third opinion always helps no matter what.

OlintoJr, I have no dreams of making it to a partner level. I actually want to venture into the arts, marketing, or advertising, but am carefully using the accounting route to gain connections with people in other industries. Also, tax knowledge is always an asset no matter what profession you're in.

mla, yes, that was me. I also take powernaps at work. It's my own form of coffee – that, and tomato juice.

DoOver, being associated with the night industry is not good in, really, any industry – except, maybe, marketing/advertising/arts – and, especially, being a go-go dancer or a stripper – BIG no-no. Personally, I would think it's awesome if someone did this as a side job – I'd see the person as multi-talented and the potential & capability of connecting with different people & personalities, and having a broader mindset. But some view it as unacceptable and detrimental to the company's reputation. People like these have angered me in the past, but I've learned to live with them and accept them for who they are. I just don't associate myself with them besides work.

To answer your question: Yes, if the information would be found by your co-workers and place of employment, it would most certainly impact your reputation at work. I'm of the opinion that all of upper management would frown upon such employment, and some of the guys would probably be secretly jealous. Some of the gals would probably be secretly turned on. Of course, assuming a straight/straight scenario.

With that said, it sounds like this CPA firm is a stepping stone to other career opportunities. If that's the case, keep doing what you do, nephew.

I think it makes for a cool story… As long as you are comfortable with it, who cares. I feel like Roger Phillip may have done something like that? I definitely remember that he was a bar tender… Did the dating game….

You are the only one who is in your firm, are they the work hard, play hard types? If so, I wouldn't worry about too much judgment. I wouldn't tell anyone though. But if it comes out so be it.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.
