soooo….no accountants love their jobs?
December 11, 2014 at 7:33 pm #635471Rocky123MemberMy current one is dull and not challenging. That will change now that I have my CPA. Going to look elsewhere.

December 11, 2014 at 7:37 pm #635473krschneidsMemberI love my job! I work as an auditor for a mid-sized public firm (top 15), and I just really like my company and the people I work with. Benefits are great, work/life balance is pretty good for public, and pay is VERY nice.
Worst part, hmmm…I'm out of town about 2 weeks out of every month, so I'm paying pretty high rent on an apartment I'm only living in for half of every month, lol.

Best parts- the hours, international travel, co-workers, good pay, good benefits, awesome boss, work/life balance
Worst parts- if I wasn't studying for the CPA, this month would go by very slowly as most people are out of the office on Holiday
CPA, CFE

I'm a controller at a hospital and usually have to put in extra hours, but I have the flexibility to work from home. Also, since I commute an hour each way, my boss is very understanding and lets me work from home if I need to. The best part is that I have a staff of six accountants (all ladies) and they all get along, no drama!

December 11, 2014 at 9:01 pm #635476SeaPeaYayParticipantI enjoy my job. I work in a Tax firm. I prepare 1040s 1065s 1120S and 1120s also a few 1041s. I then pass my work along to one of the firm partners for review. This is a career change for me (I am forty). I really enjoyed Tax season and while I only worked an average of 51 hours p/wk I am hoping to up that next season to 60-65 hours per week. Working on taxes feels like working a puzzle, and is usually quite challenging. The non busy times are pretty slow though. Hoping as I spend longer in the field to accumulate my own clients and increase my work load.

If I didn't have to deal with external auditors so much, I may like my job more 🙂 I'm the first, and only, IT auditor at my company, so it's been definitely challenging figuring out how to do everything! But I'd rather stay busy than be bored.
December 11, 2014 at 9:58 pm #635478ZulyParticipantI love my job! I work in corporate accounting and although month end closing seems like a really bad version of “Ground Hog” day I love the company I work for and the people I work with. Accounting wasn't my first choice in a career but I know that accountants are always needed so hopefully I'll always have stability for me and my family.

I oversee the accounting system and help the accountants when they run into issues. I get to use my accounting and computer science degree. Month end is rough sometimes but I like chaos.

December 11, 2014 at 10:23 pm #635480FanalystMemberI love my job….or at least as much as someone could enjoy sitting inside at a desk. But I'm in corporate finance, not accounting. It's great because no day/week/month/quarter is the same. When I come in on Monday, my to-do list is completely different from the week before.
Best parts:
1. Business case analysis (getting to dig into a potential project gives you exposure to different parts of the company and helps you understand the industry better)
2. Working with all the different aspects of Capital markets (bankers, lawyers, investors, market trends, etc.)
3. Work/Life balance. I work 40-45 hours every week (literally don't think I've worked over 50 at any point)
Worst part:
1. Debt compliance
December 11, 2014 at 11:08 pm #635481MydnightDarkfyreParticipantI am an IT Auditor for a Big 4. I love the mix of clients and projects. I love the people I work with (the reason I chose this Big 4 firm in particular). Our busy season is NOT as terrible as our financial auditor counterparts (I'm working mandatory 50 hour weeks right now, but that's only from Sept-Jan). I actually like the work I do – there are so many controls to test and things to do, that if I get bored of one thing I just start working on one of the other 5 things on my plate 😉

December 11, 2014 at 11:37 pm #635482MjganierParticipantI work in state government as a Corporate Income and Franchise Tax Auditor and I absolutely love it! Most of my audits are out of state so I get to travel and see many parts of the US. When I'm not traveling. I work out of my home office since my city no longer has a state revenue office. It's great to not have to go out in cold to go to work when I just go upstairs to the office. The pay is pretty decent, the hours are good, many holidays and sometimes half days if they're feeling generous, and the benefits are great. Only downside is that the turnaround for a typical audit can sometimes take 6mo to a couple years due to taxpayer issues and having to get info the taxpayer didn't send. Oh! Best part is I should be getting a hefty raise once I get my CPA!

December 12, 2014 at 2:01 pm #635483AnonymousInactiveI tolerate my job. I am a sales and use tax auditor. It can be interesting, but it also gets tiring having to always be the “bad guy” even when it is the taxpayer's fault. Now that I have my CPA, I have started to think about moving on.
December 12, 2014 at 2:16 pm #635484MjganierParticipant@ajones19 I did some sales and use tax auditing for a while also. I can understand. It hurts to have to tell some taxpayers they owe several thousand taxes because either they didn't know of the law or their accountant didn't do the work correctly. I had one taxpayer break down in tears in front of me. Probably the most awkward experience I've ever had. Sales and use tax can also get very monotonous and you end up doing the same thing over and over again. That was my main reason for moving to CIFT. It's a much bigger challenge to take on as well as the fact that I deal with large corporations that won't take it personally when I slap a million dollar assessment on them. If you enjoy doing tax auditing and want a change, and can switch divisions, I'd recommend it since CIFT is soooo much more diverse.
