Advice on Technical Interview with EY

*Just got an email saying they’ve rejected me even before the interview Lol. This is bizarre

    .

A week ago I applied for an IT Audit position with EY. I got an “off the record” call from an EY recruiter telling me that his friend had put in a strong recommendation for me and he was about to call me before I even applied for the job. That did surprise me.. a coincidence there. He asked me a couple of questions, after pulling my resume but then told me that from my speaking he felt that I lacked enthusiasm so that might hurt my chances with them. I was heart-broken, since English is my second language and it’s not easy for me to speak it as good as Americans do. But a week later I got an email that he’s scheduling a technical interview with me. Apart from working on my “enthusiasm”, any advice on how to impress?

Sounds like prejudice to me 🙁

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Is this over the phone? You have to smile when you talk when it's over the phone…I speak English very well but I come off as bored when I speak in my normal tone, so when I smile and talk in phone interviews, it makes me sound excited that they called and interested in the position…it also gives me some energy for some reason…

If it's in person, direct eye contact, listening to the question so you answer what they are actually asking and making the interview a conversation is best, and also know your stuff since it is a technical interview…

BEC: 73, 77! Thank you Lord! and WTB
REG: 71, 82! Thank you Lord! and A71
FAR: 72, 78! Thank you God and my Mommy in Heaven!

@Study Monk, I do sometimes feel it's prejudice. All I can do is keep piling up certificates (I passed the CISA, hopefully I've passed all of CPA by Monday). I don't wanna sound self-important but I know a ton of people who can barely put a sentence together but they get hired.Everyone deserves a shot, no matter how they talk, if they can do the job. I have work experience, education, I know I can. Just need that chance.

@teeteenounouche, I actually told the recruiter that I perform better in face-to-face interviews. I've tried so many things, like smiling, drinking coffee, even having a shot of whiskey but it's so hard to change a habit like speaking at a slow rate.

But I'm confused now, people. A day after sending me the request for a phone interview I got an email from EY that they rejected me. Should I ask them what's going on?

Yes, maybe there are different recruiters handing things…I would send an email back to the person who requested the tech interview and reference the rejection and ask if there was an error on the site or something like that…

BTW, don't admit things that you are not confident in to recruiters…when you admit things, people take that as a weakness…from my experience, the people who get ahead, “fake it 'till they make it”

@teeteenounouche Thanks. I'll take your advice on this. One of my professors also told me that I was too modest. I think I'll start trying to present my best self from now on. Let me cross my fingers with EY. I have the passion, it's unfortunate that doesn't come out easily but I'll keep trying.

Good luck! You have what it takes with your credentials and experience so let it shine through! I have the same issue with not wanting to boast or seem pretentious but when it comes to our livelihoods, we have to give it our all (without being obnoxious of course, lol). Otherwise, no one will know how talented we are 😉

Sorry about that, I think you probably talked to a recruiter who has some kind of prejudice for people with accent lol.

Some recruiters will go through this route to weed out applicants especially when there are too many applicants.

But this is a tech job, and we all know how foreigners (esp. INDIANS) dominate this field. I think you were not lucky on this one but better days are still ahead for you.

Pass the CPA exams, get the license and you will be fine.

@stoleway thanks. That does make sense to me. Though the offices which I applied to have so many people with accents. What will it hurt them to hire one more that actually cares about IT ? Lol. But, you're right. I'm gonna try the other Big Fours and if they also reject me I'll go for the small 10 lol
