Any Hope for Me Passing

Well, it’s almost the 22nd and I’ve put off speculating long enough that it’s now eating me inside. Here’s my AUD exam experience:

MCQ – not noticeably harder (probably a bad sign). Flagged roughly the same # of questions each time. This kind of worries me, but at the same time, who really knows with AUD? I surprisingly didn’t get too many question on the topic that I (and most people) feel like is the hardest in AUD, so that doesn’t feel good either, especially since I neglected studying as hard for the others as a result.

SIMS – I thought I did well aside from 1 of the tabs and the 2 research Qs I got. I’ve had really bad luck with research questions in the actual CPA somehow. I normally crush them in Becker, but I’ve never found one definitive answer in the actual exam. Maybe this is me overthinking it, but it’s kind of frustrating because those should be gimmes. I felt pretty solid about one of them and one of them was a very educated guess, so I very well could be overthinking those.

Assuming worst case scenario (I bombed the hard tab and the 2 research Qs), I probably failed because I don’t think my MCQ were great. Has anyone else felt similar and ended up passing?

I was under the impression that if you get 2 research questions, 1 has to be pretest. I took AUD today as well and had 2 research questions…as well. 1 I found and the other had 2 possible answers, which makes me think that the latter was pretest.

The SIMS were iffy for me today. I felt just “ok” with the MCQs. It's all a crapshoot! May the odds be in our favor 🙂

    FAR: 7/17/14- 79
    AUD: 8/20/14- 91
    REG: 10/1/14- 88
    BEC: 11/10/14- 85

There is no way to know if one of the Research questions is pretest. It's done and you can't change it now. Try not to stress over it. You will only end up making yourself sick. I agree with Tiff – It's all a crapshoot!!! Good luck to both of you!

I don't know where you're testing, justgivemea75, but did you know that the scores for a lot of states are released one business day earlier than the official release date? That's today. So you might already have a passing score.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

I just checked. My advisory score says 76, which means I passed. However, I'm panicking right now. My friend claims that the advisory score on the NASBA website is scaled 10 points higher than actual. This would be devastating for me because my scores are 76 and 84. If it's really 10 points higher, I actually failed BOTH. I have a feeling he's trolling me, but can someone please confirm or deny? I'm gong crazy now that he's put that bit of doubt in my mind!

I know EXACTLY how you feel about the research questions. I made a post an hour ago about just that. I get my results tomorrow but the two research questions are almost impossible for me to answer. For FAR, it is the complete opposite as it is fairly easy. Good luck!

Woo! Thanks a lot everyone. I can't believe I passed.

CPAHopeful: Don't worry too much. I've had bad luck with research even in FAR and I still passed that one as well. If I can pass this exam, anyone can. I only studied one week (very poor planning on my part) and didn't even get through 6 but still did it somehow. Got very, very lucky but I'm glad it's done. Just gotta make sure I pass BEC/REG within 18 months because I do not want to retake FAR lol.

Didn't see your post about passing, congrats!

I envy you so much for being able to barely study for a week and still pass. I study for hours and hours and still haven't had much luck. I'm hoping I pass Audit because if I don't I will almost certainly lose credit for my BEC exam.

    @CPA:

To be fair, my studying for a week was full-time. I put in at least 5 hours per day and I can think of 3-4 where I was doing 8-12. It was a cram and I was very lucky to pass because the MC was awful. The only thing that saved me were the SIMs, because I'm typically quite good at JE stuff naturally. Doing FAR before AUD helped TREMENDOUSLY in that regard. FAR throws hard JEs, so AUD's relatively easy adjusting entries were a cinch for me.

Yeah, I really struggle with the adjusting entries part on the simulations. Where could I look at to improve on that area? I believe that is definitely one area that gives me a lot of trouble on both FAR and AUD simulations.

    #589088

Well, I don't know how much this helps, but what I usually do is write down what they did and what they should have done. For example (note to big brother watching me: this wasn't on my exam, just a hypothetical to better illustrate my point), let's say that they expensed something that should have been capitalized. I write down:

    JE they made:

    DR: Expense

    CR: Cash/AP/etc.

    JE they should have made:

    DR: Asset

    CR: Cash/AP/etc.

Then I look at the two journal entries and think about what's going on (i.e. this is what we do at year end). Well, from the looks of it, we currently DO NOT have an asset that we should have recorded. I need to put that on my books. Therefore, I know for sure I need to:

    DR: Asset

Furthermore, our expenses are overstated and we need to lower them, plus I need something to balance out my adjusting entry. Well that's convenient. I need to:

    CR: Expense

Finally, cash/AP/whatever is already fairly stated. It's only the left-side that was screwed up. Therefore, no further adjusting accounts are necessary.

    Therefore, the adjusting entry is:

    DR: Asset

    CR: Expense

That's obviously a simplistic example, but I've found that writing out both and then thinking about what my desired outcome needs to be is the best way to answer those questions. The difference between what they did and my desired outcome should be, effectively is the adjusting entry.

Hope that helps a little bit.
