Apply Directly or Use Recruiter

I’ve been trying to get into a general accounting role lately, so I’ve been applying to a few jobs. I’ve noticed that a recruiter will not work with someone who has already been in contact with someone at the company they are recruiting for. For instance, I applied for one position and spoke with the Controller. The next week, a recruiter called about the position I spoke to the Controller about. Once I mentioned I had already spoken with her, the recruiter let me know he couldn’t present me for the position. The Controller was hesitant because of my lack of general accounting experience, but I can’t help but to think the recruiter would have at least gotten me an interview. Now I’m hesitant to apply to so many positions because a recruiter may call with something they can get me into but I’ve already applied directly.

Any advice on how to proceed?

It probably has to do with their commission and you/the company saying, “you didn't lead him/her to this position, so we won't pay your commission.” My advice would to keep doing both. At the end of the day, if the controller did/didn't like you after speaking to you, they wouldn't suddenly like you after talking to a recruiter.

@lude, that's true, but sometimes a recruiter has more clout with the client than a random applicant. Plus, someone presented to a client by a recruiter is more effective than blindly applying online. I'll probably continue both, but maybe reach out to the recruiter to see what type of positions they may have me in mind for.
