Are medical expenses added back for AMT? I think I just got a becker question that says they are in fact deducted and not added back. Any feedback?

This is always an area of confusion esp those using or who used Becker like myself, because of how poorly it's worded in the Becker book. Med expenses are allowed as a deduction for amt too and therefore are not an add back. Add backs are those items that are allowed as deductions when computing taxes owed but not allowed when computing amt. note however that for amt you re only allowed to deduct medical in the amount above 10 percent of agi. So if its senior, for tax they get to deduct the amount above 7.5 percent of agi but for amt are onlyallowed the amount above ten, therefore there is an addback for the spread between 10 and 7.5. This only happens with seniors
