    Hi everyone,

I’ve posted my question in AUD study group, but nobody responded. So, I hope someone will be able to help me here…

I’m studying with CPA Excel, and there is nothing about Audit tick marks. However, there are couple of SIMS in WTB involving tick marks.. and I have no clue how to use them. Is there a list of all marks and their meaning?

    Thanks

There is no standard for tickmarks. The tickmarks used are created by the Auditor and a legend is created by them to indicate what each one means. If the WTB Sims are similar to the Becker Sims then you are probably asked to decipher what each tickmark means based on the entry it is next too. The idea is your should know what procedures you are performing that would describe that tickmark. For example, A tickmark at the bottom of a balance sheet for the beginning period could indicate the total matches the ending balance of the previous year. Does that make sense? Sorry if it doesn't my mind is a bit off I am waiting for score releases.

There's no specific list, that i know of at least. Sometimes a check mark can mean that a column has been properly footed, but sometimes it can me that an amount agrees to a prior year balance. I did the couple that were in the WTB. It should give you a description there of what each tick mark means for that specific question. Then you just have be able to figure out what each tick mark may mean, what would make the most sense. If you have a depreciation schedule and there is a star next to each prior year balance and a circle at the bottom of the column, next to a total, what could those possibly mean? The star obviously represents – ties to prior year balance and the circle would clearly mean – properly footed. I hope that helps. They just take practice, but I'm sure you can figure it out 🙂

lol. I know these responses are a few weeks old, but I figured I'd share some light on the subject.

Let me start off by saying I work for an audit firm.

“Tick marks” are just random symbols that auditors use to say something over and over again…. like a check mark. When an auditor is completing a test, they will show the tick mark and will explain what the tick mark means.

For example: V = traced outstanding check to check register.

The auditor can create whatever symbol they want as long as they explain what the symbol is somewhere.

When you see these symbols in Wiley, just try and think of what the auditor is trying to prove by using that symbol. You'll get the hang of it!

    BEC - 80
    AUD - 64, 75 - credit lost, 90!!
    REG - 73, 74, 83
    FAR - 61, 72, 85

Feels good finishing on my best note. Time to watch the mailbox.
