I have recently had a second interview with a CPA firm. They just sent me a request for a background check. Should I consent to this request even if they have not made an offer? My current employer sent a background check only after I had accepted an offer. I am worried because they will be able to see how much I have made at my previous and my current employment and they may use this in a decision in making their offer. Not sure what to do.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

Edit: Just an FYI, I have not had any contact since after my second interview other than the thank you email I sent.

Did they ask you during either of your interviews about your current salary and did you answer? If you gave them a number already it doesn't really matter at this point because an offer can be withdrawn if you inflated that number.

If you did not already answer that question give them a call or email and ask if there is an offer pending. Also check your states laws because some states do not allow background checks before an offer.

But basically unless you're willing to walk away from this potential job, if its legal for them to ask you really don't have a lot of leverage to decline.

I have not gave them any numbers for previous and current salary. I left it blank.

I received an email asking for a phone call. I think I will wait to submit the background check until after the phone call.

I just had background check. I was making 63k, I told them I made 66k and they offered me 78k with bonus. I didn't know that background checks show salary info???
