BEC-Beast In Disguise

I was just wondering why people thought BEC was the easiest section. When doing progress test, I’m scoring lower on BEC, than any of the other sections, despite spending the most time on it. I have my test on May 25th, have finished all the material (usually scoring in the low 70’s on the HW), but keep scoring a 62 on the 100 question progress tests. NOW I’M PANICKING. Everyone always speaks about how easy this section is, but how the hell is that true.

My only saving grace is that I usually score 80+, when I do 20-30 question progress tests from the entire software-so maybe i’m fatiguing on the software, when I try to complete 100 questions. Still making me nervous that I’ve been scoring so low on the 100 question progress tests.

Relative to the other sections, was the BEC from Becker more difficult than the actual test? There’s no way in hell the CPA could expect some of the calculations Becker does in such a limited amount of time. Nothing compares to how much I’m truly despising this one section of the CPA.

B=84 This exam was such a b**** that I thought I failed-don't know how these things work
A=76 Slacker I am, I'll happily take it
    R=81 I LOVE taxes
F=80 I don't wanna get banned for an expletive I'm thinking with "yea" proceeding it

BEC is a beast to prepare for. the exam will require calculations that are quicker than the review material to complete but you have to know the entire concept to get the right answer. so work through the complex calcs and master the concepts and don't allow your preoccupation with the question you asked to distract you from learning what the review mcq is trying to teach you. at some point go through the recently released exam questions to get a feel for what the exam will expect.
keep at it and stay positive.

I didn't think it was easy, certainly not any easier than the other sections. I didn't use Becker, but people frequently mention that the calculations are ridiculous.

I thought the hard thing about studying for BEC was the time it took to get a grasp of all the calculations. On the other sections I could get through 70 – 100 questions per day if I really focused. BEC I'd spend hours on 20 questions.

That's what i mean, the progress test allows for 1.5 minutes/question, but I would need a crap-ton more time to work through all the questions, since they're insanely computationally heavy. Perhaps I should do progress tests chapter by chapter?

Yeah, BEC sucked. I took it last saturday. It was MUCH harder than Ninja for me, which was the exact opposite of what I experienced with FAR.

Though…it was still overall easier than FAR, and from what I've seen of REG (started studying for it yesterday), it's much easier than that too.

Actually, “easy” or “easier” should never be used to describe any of these awful, horrible, hellish exams. >:(

Ok, just took a 50 question progress test and scored a 74. I try to look at what I do wrong each time and not the correct answer. This way, I don't memorize answers and I don't make the same mistakes twice. Maybe it's just fatigue on those 100 question tests, since this portion seems to have the most calculations :(.

If it makes you feel better I guessed on all finance questions on the exam (I left the finance section for the last day before my test and none of it stuck) and I still passed. I would not recommend this though as I'm sure there are versions of the test out there I would have failed. If you do ok memorizing the finance formulas and are scoring in the 70's I'd say you have a solid chance. Just keep studying.

    FAR - 80 (November 2015)
AUD - 73, 67. (Ok I gotta confess I was even more lazy this time around)

If you're using Becker, don't get caught up in all the lengthy, multi-step computational questions. I never mastered variance analysis, and while I did get variance questions on my exam none of them were as ridiculous as the ones Becker gives you. Honestly, I still don't understand cost accounting at all, and I passed BEC.

They do say in the Becker lectures that those longer questions will very rarely if not at all show up on the exam. I haven't taken the exam yet, but it really seems like they're just trying to get you to understand the process so you can use your knowledge to workout problems on your own. Better to know too much than to know too little.
