    Hi guys,

I just completed my background check form for a Big 4 firm.. I start my job in January. I am a bit concerned with one item on the check and wanted your opinion on it.

When I originally applied to the firm via online portal the education section asked for my overall GPA (3.5), GPA in major (3.7), and then there was another section that asked for my school name, major, and GPA.. In this section it did not specify whether it wanted overall GPA or GPA in major.. I ended up listing my in major (3.74) though as that’s what I thought it was asking.

Now, fast forward to my background check I completed today. Some items on the form automatically pulled from the firms online portal, including my GPA. It pulled in 3.74. I now realize that the online app was for overall gpa, but I listed my higher in major gpa. I am worried that this will pose an issue as the numbers don’t align.

My original thought was that I am fine, as I seperately stated both gpa’s in the other section of the form (and also verified it in an email to the firm around that time). My intention was clearly not to deceive. But not I am stressing out. What do you guys think?

If there is a huge variation either the firm or the background investigation company will call you. I worked for a temp company back in 2006 for 6 months and for some reason they had my listed as still employed. The background investigation company called me and I had to get my W2 from them and then just explained to them that it was a temp company I worked for.

As long as you are truthful and not being deceiptful everything should be fine. I am sure you are not the first person to intepret what they were asking wrong.

One day you'll look back at your post and laugh. It's amazing how job candidates worry about the smallest things. You're fine, get ready for work.

    Dude, calm down.

Unless you just made up the higher GPA, you are fine. If questioned, give the answer. A 3.5 vs 3.7 is not going to make ANY DIFFERENCE in getting the job. You graduated, and did pretty damn well in your accounting classes as well as overall.

Thanks Bros. I guess I was getting stressed over nothing. I know these firms can be very strict about stuff like this since ethics are a big issue… As mentioned, a reasonable person looking at my situation would see a non-issue, but I wanted some outside opinions.
