CA Ethics Exam – Do questions change on each attempt?

I’m currently working on the CA Ethics Exam. I just tried submitting my first attempt, but did not pass. I was expecting this…it’s a tough exam. I spent HOURS identifying the questions I got wrong and corrected them on my print out of the questions. What I was not expecting is when I tried to take the test for my second attempt, I got a whole new set of 50 questions. My understanding from researching this site and online was that you get 3 tries to pass the exam with 90% but the exam questions do not change, only the order they show up on the exam should change on the exam. Did I misunderstand? Is each test attempt you take supposed to be a whole new set of 50 questions or do you get the same 50 questions in a random order? Anybody working on it now or worked on it recently?

    Hello there!

I struggled with this exam as well and I can attest to the fact that you do NOT get a whole new set of 50 questions, rather they are in a different order.

In my experience there are only 2 versions they could give you of the same set of questions. I suggest you print out the questions before you start answering them. That way if you have to retake the exam again, you can try and determine which questions you may have answered incorrectly. Because as you may or may not know, the order in which they present the topics you need to review coincides with the order of the questions you were tested (if that makes any sense).

Thanks CPA4birthdaypresent – I appreciate the response. What you said is exactly what I've heard in the past, however, I just got off the phone with CALCPA and they informed me that the Ethics Exam has changed (a few weeks back). You no longer get the same 50 questions in a random order on try #2 and #3. You get a whole new set of 50 questions. This is unfortunate, since I spent hours trying to figure out which of the 50 questions I got wrong based on their recommendation on the areas to study again. I was aware that the order in which the topics you need to review coincides with the order of the questions you were tested on. So, I wasted hours on figuring those out because now I have to start from scratch on 50 new questions. I am so bummed and wish I had gotten this done prior to the change. Also, I stressed to the lady from CALCPA that the change in the format of the exam should be communicated because until last night, I had no idea the format had changed. 🙁

Thank you for this post. I was going crazy with everyone telling me that the questions are all the same. I had the misfortune of not fully reviewing my first exam before submitting because I expected to be able to change my answers on 2nd and 3rd try. I got an 86% and now I have to start over. If only I had known it was a brand new test every time!

I got an 86 on my first attempt and then got a whole new set of 50 questions. I've been leisurely going through them for a month now. Or would that just be procrastinating? I am down to 5 more questions. UGH! Then I'm double checking every single one!

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!

FYI, the CA Ethics exam has changed! I printed my 2nd attempt out at the end of April and I worked on it whenever I had a few moments to spare. I was so excited Friday night to finally finish and I double checked my answers. Then I logged into CalCPA and noticed their site had totally changed… And so did the Ethics Exam! I was not a happy camper… I sent a message to them, but they aren't there over the weekend. So I started working on the new exam. I am on #20 and this morning I got an email back from them saying now the exam changes every time you log out. My heart sank! More wasted time? They also said now you can save your answers, so that is a plus.

I've been experimenting with it this morning. I logged in and low and behold I have the same exam as Friday night (thank god). I've filled in answers and logged out and logged back in and it saves them. Yay?! I am happy about that. I'm just super unhappy that I've wasted hours and hours on this, unnecessarily.

I really need to get through this ASAP, I was extremely disappointed after received a letter letting me know that I needed two more units now I am going through a stupid class and still have to complete the ethics exam. This was tougher than everyone made it seem. How did they get through only 16 hrs of studying and passing. I have scored 86% on my first attempt.

    BEC-75 (1/14)
    AUD- 55(5/13), 62(4/14), 76 (8/14)
    FAR- 69(4/13), 70(7/13), 76 (2/14)

Any idea what happens if you fail 3 times in a row? Do you need to wait a certain amount of time before re-attempting? This kind of sucks as I wasn't anticipating this change..

I've heard that you email them and they give you 3 more attempts.
